District hires nine new teachers for 1967 68
Mon ticello Community school district hires nine new teachers for the 1967 68 year to fill vacancies after resignations by seven staffers. Dennis Harken becomes vice principal replacing Paul Beck, with Harken joining from Jesup and a background at SCI and State College of Iowa. Additional hires include Marilyn Jones in speech and dramatics, Judy Ferris in kindergarten, and Gary Palmer as wrestling coach and science instructor, with retirements and other classroom posts filled by Helen Guyan and Wilma Edwards and Alice Moser. Two summer only instructors are Louis Haasis and Robert George.

Sacred Heart Ten Earn High Ratings at Regional Speech Fest
Ten Junior High students from Sacred Heart earned superior and excellent ratings at the Area II division of the Dubuque Archdiocesan Junior High Speech Festival held at Regis High School in Cedar Rapids. First row names include Kenneth Schwendinger Rita Hinz Lynne Martinsen Judy Goedken with second row featuring Robert Kremer Scott Hornstein Nick Strittmatter Janice Schlimmer and Cathleen Stark. A total of 198 students from 13 schools entered six events. Sister Felice teaches the Sacred Heart speech program.

Changes in Jones county zoning ordinance discussed
The Regional Planning Commission reviewed proposed changes to the Jones county zoning ordinance at a Monday meeting. A public information meeting is set for May 31. Modifications include reducing rural lot size from three to one acre, a minimum one acre tract width of 150 feet, lowering rural residence size from 825 to 768 square feet, allowing farm related home businesses, permitting tree plantings for junkyard screening, and routing ordinance matters through the county auditor's office.

Two Maquoketa Boys Charged With Larceny
Two Maquoketa juveniles David Bearce 16 and Marvin Edwards 15 were charged with larceny for thefts at the Janet Mooney residence near Monticello. Items stolen included watches a necklace a camera a diamond ring a wrist watch and a transistor radio. The car owner was Michelle Brown and the stolen items belonged to both women. The youths were held by the Jackson county sheriff and transferred to Jones county authorities for district court proceedings.
