The Monticello Fire Department was summoned at 4 p.m. last Wednesday to the east edge of Monticello to battle a fire near three large Farm Service tanks holding fuel oil and gasoline. A small nearby building was badly charred but there was no explosion danger once the flames were extinguished.
Fire victim Dewey Gesie a Farm Service bulk tank agent was seriously burned when a blaze broke out near three Farm Service tanks. He was drilling a hole to install a pipe for a visible indicator when sparks ignited gasoline as volunteers from Monticello helped stabilize him on a stretcher. He sustained second degree burns to his left arm.
Official docket items show multiple justice of the peace cases including speeding and stop sign offenses with bonds forfeited or fines paid. A separate section lists new cars and trucks registered with the Jones county treasurer including makes such as Chevrolet Ford GMC Oldsmobile and various owners in Anamosa Monticello and Monticello area.
The weather box was omitted as Monticello police did not record readings. Early week brought fair skies in the Express area ending a period of rain and heat with relief from recent hot humid conditions.
A fire at three large Farm Service bulk tanks along Highway 38 in east Monticello seriously injured Gesie a Farm Service bulk tank agent who drilled a hole in a tank to install a pipe. Sparks from the drill ignited gasoline and oil spraying onto his clothes causing second degree burns. He walked to the Meron office to summon help and was treated at John McDonald hospital, released Monday morning.
Surplus commodities will be handed out to Jones county recipients Monday June 26 from 830 a.m. until 3 30 p.m. according to the Social Welfare office. The commodities will be distributed in the Community room of the courthouse in Anamosa.
District court actions include hospital suit against Allen and Michelle Brown for 106.74 plus costs for services from 1965 to 1967. Two traffic collision suits involve Angela Cigrand and guardians seeking 10000 damages plus 3016.40 in expenses. A second suit lists Grace Larson, Rosie Holub, and Ray Larson against Gerald Lange over a 1965 highway 64 crash with multiple injury claims. Inmates filed habeas corpus writs, and a 320 acre Jones county partition was ordered with specified heirs receiving shares and a sale to be made. A sodomy conviction and five year reformatory sentence were noted, plus several other docket items including a hospital judgment and habeas actions.
The Rev Norton J McCaughan will assume pastoral duties at SS Peter and Paul Lutheran in Castle Grove township west of Monticello and at St John’s Lutheran in Hopkinton starting July 7. The Rev Robert Neiderwimmer, Monticello, has filled both roles since March 1 after Rev Richard Zellmer resigned to Eldorado. No further details were available at press time Wednesday.
Two Anamosa area residents report for Army induction on Tuesday afternoon. Robert McCullough of Center Junction and Quinton Davis of Olin will report for basic training at Fort Campbell Kentucky.
