After last week?s unofficial results, Jones county Republicans trail in turnout as Democrats show renewed interest. The piece urges both parties to imitate 4-H enthusiasm seen in Morley and Monticello rallies to energize voters for the next fall election.
Monticello residents Mrs. Elsie C Hiller joined Mr and Mrs Harold Scherrer and family for a Sunday visit in Waterloo at the Reed Weidman Podhaski home. The Podhaski family hosted Judy Podhaski’s return from college and marked Steve’s 14th birthday.
The May 14 meeting at Morley school planned a June 10 club tour and a pot luck dinner at Cecil Hay’s home. Johnny Jackson and Fritz Meineke hosted while Douglas Larson and others gave demos on fitting showing and corn borers.
Mothers of the Clay Busy Bees 4-H club gathered May 23 at Onslow church basement for a Spring Flowers themed supper. Jerilyn Jansen and Roseann Larkey decorated, each girl contributed a dish, and after the meal Alice Larkey led a welcome. Jerilyn Jansen sang Dreaming, Karen Allen delivered the creed, and a business meeting followed with Mary Ellen Reid performing the 4-H Field Song.
Cass Corner Chums met May 10 in the Community room at the courthouse. Members talked about summer meeting dates and elected reps for Rallyday and various club activities. Sharlan Pillard read the creed and was selected as Rallyday representative.
The Washington Tigers met May 21 at the Martin home with 23 members. Bill Martin chosen for Ames short course. club tour set for June 24 and next meeting July 16. Cass Center Hustlers May 8 at Jim Askam’s. county 4-H Round-Up at Monticello June 1. tour planned for June 17 with picnic at Askam’s. dehorn calf demo by Askam. talks by Ortgies on Corn Borers and Pillard on Physique. Johan Tapken joined. Jack Meyer guest. Prairie Pals held a May 18 pot luck at St Joseph’s parish hall. program, songs, and dance followed. gifts to mothers. Castle Grove Fortune Finder girls cooked for mothers May 21 at Castle Grove Lutheran church. six teen girls, 15 mothers and a guest attended. menu included minute steaks, scalloped potatoes, creamed peas, pineapple jello salad, rolls, relish trays, pumpkin pie. entertainment by Julie Schlarmann, JoAnn Delay piano solo, readings by Diana Schatz, Sharon Behrends and Sharon Gerdes. Janet Donovan offered Love Cake for Mother.
Helen Schneir performed a violin solo while Eleanor Oltmann read Mother. Barbara Eberhart and Nancy Mardorf played a clarinet duet Melody March. Judy Poppe read What Every Mother Ought to Know and Margaret Mary Fleming sang. Judith Black read When Mother Stays in Bed. Lorraine Kehoe played accordion. Suzanne Mardoff recited country girls creed. Elizabeth Specht closed with Dreaming. JoAnn Delay was elected campaign speaker for Judy Poppe for county officer candidate.
The South Fork Haymakers 4-H club gathered at Dick Jergens's home on May 21 at 9 PM after games. Jerry Heeren read the previous meeting minutes while Harvey Fife from Manchester shared project updates. A club tour was scheduled for June 11 and Jerry Heeren was nominated for the Ames short course.
