Mrs. Esther Gilbertson greets visitors at Monticello high school as eight conference schools take part. Monticello hosts the WaMaC speech and drama festival with twenty nine MHS students entering the competition.
The jury in James Leo Berry’s murder cases delivered no verdict in the second trial held in Linn county after a prior hung jury in October in Jones county. Berry faced first degree murder charges for the June 26 center jet shooting of Clarence Yarborough, who died eight hours later.

A drug informational meeting sponsored by Jones County 4-H will be held Thursday Feb 25 at 7 30 p m in Strawberry Hill School Anamosa. Lt Louis Stepanek Cedar Rapids Police Department will lead the session outlining narcotics and dangerous drugs issues and community impact for adults working with youth and 4 H leaders and parents.
One new criminal charge and two cases heard in Jones county district court this past week. Joseph John Lasack of Olin faced a February 9 driving while license suspended charge transferred from Howard K. Mackey’s justice court. On February 10 James Weston Savage paid a $300 fine for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and had a 120 day license suspension. Economy Savings & Loan Co. received a judgment of $454.62 against H D and Esther J Devoe plus seven percent interest and costs.
The Monticello Police Dept. charged Raymond A. Steffen of New Vienna with failure to stop in the assured clear distance ahead after a February 2 collision. The Express corrects an earlier report that had named Harry E. Boots III of Center Junction.
Monticello high school girls Barbara Patten and Joan Indekofer won first places in expository declamation and interpretive poetry at the WaMaC speech and drama meet held Saturday in Monticello. Monticello teams totaled 29 entrants, placing second among eight WaMaC schools behind Manchester with Marion third.
Elderly couple Mr. and Mrs. Carl Heideman and son Duane escaped an early evening blaze that gutted their two story frame house. An overheated oil stove caused an explosion and smoke and fire spread through walls and shingles. Fire crews from Center Junction and Onslow fought the fire until nine. The fire rekindled Friday morning leading to additional smoldering. No injuries reported. No insurance. The Heidemans are staying with friends in Center Junction.
