The Lovell Happy Helpers 4-H club met December 12 at the Schneider home. Twenty one members answered roll call with the prompt What I Ate for Breakfast This Morning and one mother attended.
The year’s standing committees were appointed with Recreation led by Dixie Hanken Florence Meadow Sharon Mortensen and Jennifer Schneider Music chaired by Kathy Craig Sharon Schneiter Marian Fass Joyce Ann Appleby and Ways and Means by Judy Janice Schneider and Jan White. Members planned a chili supper for parents. Sharon Schneiter presented Some Good Pattern of Breakfast followed by Sharon Mortensen on Sandwiches. Carol Clark demonstrated Different Ways to Fix Eggs. Donald Clark’s class showed Muffin Method and Baking Powder Biscuit Method. A needy basket was packed, and members sang 4-H songs with a gift exchange.
The Prairie Pals 4 H club held its Christmas party on Saturday evening December 10 at the Prairieburg parish hall. Guests included the Prairie Hill Be Natural club the mothers and leaders of both clubs and committee women. Mrs Robert Holub received a gift of appreciation for her past year’s help.
Gloria Dolan welcomed guests while Julie Ann Holub led grace. Gloria Dolan and Evonne Reth poured at a festively decorated table. Frances Holub Judy Wolfe and Nancy Mee Vesey led recreation. Christmas carols, games, and contests followed. A toy and gift box was packed for John McDonald hospital. Numerous members attended.
The Clay Busy Bees 4-H club met at Jerilyn Jansen’s home on December 15 with fourteen members and two adults. Members shared breakfast items, scored fast break questionnaires, and each planned to buy a song book. Joyce Hinrichs spoke on Teens and the Teeth. Jeri Hoenshhel explained record books as gifts were exchanged and a flag set and measuring spoons were given to each girl. Lunch followed.
The Onslow Agricolae Boys 4-H club met at Stewart Snyder's home on December 15 with twelve members. Larry Otten led the meeting and planned a Christmas party at Robert Larkey's on December 21 with sleigh riding if weather allows and a gift exchange. Birdsfoot Trefoil was the main topic. Lunch was served by Mrs. Snyder.
A Christmas party was held December 18 for all members at Temple Hill. The next meeting is scheduled for January 7 with the Martin girls and Lyons girls as hostesses for next month's event.
The Prairie Panthers 4-H club met December 13 with 24 members present along with two fathers and two leaders. Bernard Goedken led brucellosis control discussion, Lawrence Holub spoke on milk pasteurization, Marcus Lawrence discussed birdsfoot trefoil, and the meeting closed with the 4-H pledge followed by lunch prepared by Tom McDonald and Roy Gogel.
The Oxford Livewires met in the all purpose room of the new Oxford Junction elementary school with Bonnie and Jim Balichek hosting. Twenty five members attended along with 14 adults and four guests. New project sheets for 1956 were distributed, plans for a Christmas party on December 14 were exchanged, Ken Hodgdon spoke on birdsfoot trefoil and Eugene Luckstead demonstrated gun safety. An estimated 34 baby beeves will be weighed on December 28. Boys began basketball practice and refreshments were provided by the hosts and their parents.
At the Livewire Lassies December meeting held at Arlette Oster’s home, 18 members five mothers and two leaders attended. They thanked mothers and members, reviewed officer training lessons, and voted to donate last month’s rolled call toys to a Cedar Rapids orphanage. Plans for the Farm Bureau program and fund raising for a county wide mental retardation program were discussed along with education talks on quick breads and meals. The meeting included a Christmas skit Christmas in the Play Room and a candle lighting finale with praise for leaders. Volunteers from the Oxford club performed, and 4-H groups and county officers prepared for Christmas celebrations and a New Year greeting to 800 4-H members in Jones county.
Greyhound routes through Monticello to Cedar Rapids and Dubuque gain new departure times from Matthiessen D X service station. To Cedar Rapids the departures are 9 45 a m 1 45 p m and 7 35 p m to Dubuque 10 30 a m 5 25 p m and 7 45 p m with most times later than before.
The poem notes 4-H activities from January to November with demonstrations talks and fairs. It highlights December gift exchanges parties and carols as a contrast and a time for remembering friends and neighbors.
A holiday message wishing Santa knows all 4-Hers and their work and fun. It hopes he visits each member in the coming week and ends with a merry Christmas to all.
Scotch Grove Sunshine 4 H girls boxed decorated Christmas cookies for the Jones County home and John McDonald hospital at their December meeting at Judy McDonald’s home. Each girl brought a dozen and a half undecorated cookies to be decorated there. Leaders Mrs. R H Oltmans and Mrs. Dean McDonald were honored with gifts after five and two years of service respectively. The program included roll call, a demonstration on cereals, a talk on meal planning, carol singing, and a gift exchange. The club moved its regular meeting day to the second Saturday each month. Guests included Mrs. Oltmans Mrs. McDonald and Mrs. Robert Paul.
The Scotch Grove Presbyterian church will host its annual Christmas program at 7 30 p m Friday evening. The event features Christmas numbers a play and music by younger children as part of the program at the home of Mr and Mrs Jack Naylor where lights brighten much of each evening.
Mrs. Kenneth Jones and her two young daughters from Clarinda were hospitalized in Missouri after their car slid off a 20 foot embankment and rolled into a creek. A tractor driver credited with saving one daughter who was underwater when rescued.
