Brakes Fail Drive-In Moment Hits Monty Cafe
A car with failing brakes drove into the Monty cafe front window Saturday at 5 26 p m causing $2 000 in cafe damage and minor front end damage to the 1966 Ford. Cafe operator Vv J Stadtmueller noted no injuries and window debris reached the kitchen. The cafe reopened after board up the window Sunday.

Jones County Projects in 5 Year Plan Focus on Highway 64
Iowa Department of Transportation released the 1977 1982 Transportation Improvement Program. In Jones County the major project is resurfacing Highway 64 from Highway 151 east to the Jackson County line slated 1978 1981. Other planned work includes bridge culvert upgrades paving right of way and drainage projects with costs ranging from 400 000 to 1 357 000 across 1978 1981. Additional items include a Monticello culvert replacement 49 000 and 1.5 miles of Highway 151 right of way 54 000 planned for 1982.

Meals on Wheels Board Meets to Discuss Delivery
Meals on Wheels board met on Tuesday December 14. November served meals totaled 489 to homebound clients. St John’s Lutheran volunteers deliver this month and January volunteers at St Matthew Lutheran are being organized by Jane Gast. Sacred Heart School sixth graders made Christmas tray favors for meal recipients.

Iowa reports record cold and drought in fall month
The Iowa Crops and Weather monthly report notes the coldest fall in the 20th century with November averaging 5 to 10 degrees below normal across most of Iowa. Dry conditions set a record dryness, lifting heating needs by 30 to 40 percent as subfreezing temperatures persisted early.

Garage Fire Damages Monticello Home
Firefighters responded to the Deborah Garien residence at 6 a.m. Sunday December 12 to contain a garage blaze. Fire chief Al Iben said the cause was not certain but suspected spontaneous combustion of painting supplies. The building suffered mainly smoke and water damage.
