Our View urges Monticello to establish a safe skating rink as the current site is repurposed for a street department garage. The council may discuss a suitable location at the next meeting, possibly at the fairgrounds park or near the swimming pool.
The Iowa State Highway Commission announced in advance a year’s program of highway construction and letting for contracts, the first such forward plan in state history. The move, and its open-door policy for press and public, are praised amid controversy over a 1665 mile highway program. It is hoped safer highways won’t invite larger vehicles that could worsen road conditions.
The Monticello Development Corporation and local manufacturers will gather for a one day industrial clinic in Des Moines on January 31. Sponsored by the Iowa Development Commission the event will cover topics from industrial planning to organizing community cooperation and opportunities for small cities. Nearly 200 chamber executives and business leaders from 54 Iowa communities and six other states attended the first clinic.

The Monticello Express is the official Monticello and Jones County newspaper established July 10 1865. It publishes weekly on Monday and Thursday and is a second class mail matter with subscriptions listed for local and national areas. It is a member of the Iowa Press Association and National Editorial Association with advertising representation in Chicago and Des Moines. One year rates are 4.50 in specific Iowa counties and 5.50 elsewhere.
Monticello neighbors hosted guests from Osage and Ryan including Mr. and Mrs. John Rickels and the Howard Kirkwood family. The L E Scott home welcomed Mrs. J S VanHooser and relatives from Poplar Bluff. Warren Kester and family from Sioux City also visited Mrs. Kesters parents Dalco and Mrs Yount and other relatives.
A mixed shower Sunday honored Bernadine Trumm who will wed Robert DeShaw on Saturday. The event included family attendees and a dinner at the McDonough home.
Thanksgiving day dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Parrott in DeWitt included Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Null, Mr. and Mrs. LaVern Schoon, Douglas, Danny and David, and Mr. and Mrs. La Verne McVay and family of Clarence.
Sunday guests included Mr and Mrs Iliff Heister and family of Zwingle and Mrs Anthony Knish and Terry of Monti cello Miss Wilma Wright returned from Iowa City hospitals after two days of examinations.
