Final free car to be given at Great Jones County Fair
The 1967 Buick LeSabre will be awarded on the final night of the 115th Great Jones County Fair on Saturday August 26. Bert McLaughlin of Mc Laughlin Motor says the drawing is at 9 30 p m. The burgundy four door hardtop with 340 cubic inch engine radio and white wall tires has a black interior. The fair’s first car award 30 years ago was a 1937 Chevrolet.

Weekend Iowa accidents report multiple crashes and injuries
A series of weekend crashes are reported around Anamosa and surrounding areas. Drivers Carol Janssen and John Michael Tudeen suffered injuries and vehicle damage occurred in multiple single vehicle rollovers and a 35 foot embankment slide. A steer caused a fatal impact on highway 136 injuring no people.
Merchants Sponsor Fair Booster Days Kicks Off In Monticello
Merchants sponsor Fair Booster Days a three day city wide bargain event begins today with 25 retail stores and businesses in the Greater Monticello committee sponsored affair. Specially reduced prices will be posted at 5 20 p m Sunday 5 9 miles northeast of Monticello on highway 151. A collision occurred when a 1966 Mercury driven by Keith Clark 28 Route 3 Cedar Rapids attempted to pass a 1953 Ford pickup driven by Gregory Manternach 16 Route 3 Monticello. Manternach was turning into Burlage Brothers farm accompanied by his three brothers Herb Edie and Randy. Clark s wife and two children were passengers in the car. No injuries reported. Damages estimated at 200 to the Mercury and 150 to the pickup. The truck is owned by Francis Manternach of Cascade.

School Opens As Teachers Plan For New Term
The mornings are set for meetings with building principals and the afternoons for lesson planning and room preparation. Organizational meetings are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday August 28 and 29 with the superintendent and principals. Classes begin August 30 at 8:45 a.m. and run to 3:30 p.m. The hot lunch program operates and buses run on schedule.

County Board Lowers Millage After Budget Hearing
The Jones County Board of Supervisors approved the 1968 county budget after a hearing with no objectors. A $100,000 cut to state institutions reduced the tax levy to $120,000, lowering millage by two. The Memorial fund rose from $500 to $1,500 for repairs at the County Memorial building in Wyoming. A stop sign at Central Park East entrance near Center Jet was approved, cigarette and liquor licenses issued to local establishments, and May and June home reports approved. A list of 51 zoning objectors was filed.
