George Rosenberger of Toledo pursues a rare hobby remodeling and electrifying antique organs. He restores them with modern wiring, keys, and sound systems, blending heritage with new technology in his workshop.
The Waukon cooperative and a regional group of creameries explore building a $500,000 milk drying plant to buy whole milk from farmers. Current patrons return as operation expands, while farmers cite benefits of selling whole milk and reducing on farm separation chores. The plan aims to better meet farmer needs and challenge outside competition, with cream separation at each creamery and skim milk processed at the new plant.
Miss Kay Ahraken of Chilocco Oklahoma visits relatives in Monticello joining Mr and Mrs John Zimmerman. Other guests include Mrs Cora Oelke Elkader Mrs A M Maurice visiting in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids families Janaf er and Jeff Liddy with grandparents in Cedar Rapids Louis Heims in Des Moines visits his mother in town and Cedar Rapids visitors dine with the Locher and Friedli families. The Steiner Bohren clan hosts a pot luck at the park Thursday noon for the guests and locals.
Oxford 4-H Happy Hustlers held a school demonstration day with senior and junior entries chosen to advance to the Jones county fair. Winners include Janis Soppe Judy Ingwersen and others presenting blu e ribbon projects on vitamins meals cookies and desserts.
The Wayne Willing Workers met July 23 at the Wayne Center school with 26 members and 2 leaders present. Sharon Zimmermann was elected treasurer for the remainder of the term. Plans were laid for the Achievement show at Wayne Lutheran church on July 27. Joan Hale, Massachusetts delegate visiting local 4-H families, spoke on her activities and home life in Berkshire County. Sharon Eilers presented Identifying Flowers, and Jean Eilers with Joyce Manternach demonstrated Making Centerpieces.
The Scotch Grove Sunshine 4-H girls held a July 23 meeting at Jeanne Bohlken’s home to greet Massachusetts visitor Adele Penny Wotjaszels. Penny spoke on Berkshire County 4-H and Jeanne presented table settings with Louella Rickless and Judy McDonald demonstrating poultry dressing. Ruth Ann Heiken reported on the state convention, while Judy McDonald and Jeanne Bohlken shared camping updates. Other guests included Mrs. Henry Delay, Sara Null, Jill Husmann and Joyce Bohbiken.
The South Fork Haymakers held their July monthly meeting at Richard and Donnie Becker’s home with 22 members and three visitors attending. Officers kept minutes, talks covered greases and lubrication and a demonstration on making a trouble light, and an ice cream social was planned for Gilbert Recker’s home on July 31.
The Greenfield Goodluck Demonstration elimination contest occurred July 16 at the Mar Tellо school house with summer trainee Mary Ellen Jones as judge. Demonstrations included Drop Sugar Cookies by Deloris Vernon and Mary Ann James and Chocolate Chip Cookies by Janet Port and Mary Carol Stewart.
Georgia Kost and Carol Kost headline junior demonstrations on tomatoes and pies for the county fair. Barbara Meeks Beverly Schley Verlynne Vernon and Ardyce Vernon present junior and senior demonstrations. Wyoming Pioneers meet July 23 with 27 members and three visitors, guest talks on 4-H projects and weed control. Oxford Livewires host meetings July 23 with Massachusetts visitors, sportsmanship talks, and grooming demonstrations. Washington Tigers hold a July 23 meeting at Temple Hill school with Massachusetts exchangees and Massachusetts 4-H program slides, followed by square dancing.
Bob Black and Phillip Gerdes hosted the Castle Grove Royal Rangers on July 23 at the Eberhart facility. The gathering featured leadership and group activities for attendees.
A machine shed event featured roll call and record books discussion. 4-H T-shirts were distributed. Bob Black demonstrated Hold Water Where It Falls, Phillip Gerdes spoke on Soil Conservation, Phillip Schlarmann on Sportsmanship. Dennis Donovan donated a picture of Army life. Loren Lubben recounted a trip to Ames Short Course. Joe Hurlbert of Massachusetts compared his state with Iowa. Lunch was served.
Stanley Harris son of Mr and Mrs George Harris spends the summer at a ranch near Albuquerque New Mexico He will be a senior in veterinary medicine at Iowa State College Ames He left Monti cello July 20 after a two week trip to Canada and the Eastern states His main activity is riding the range and branding He rode ten miles one day and had not yet reached the end of the ranch land
The rancher notes branding remains a key interest and is surprised that a wood fire still heats the branding irons. The observation highlights traditional practices in branding and rural life.
Four residents from Jones county were among 495 graduates receiving degrees at State University of Town summer commencement held Wednesday evening August 8 in the University fieldhouse. Degrees went to Paul Knipe M A John Fraser Jr B A both of Monticello James Corwin B A Anamosa and Joyce Clappy B S in nursing Oxford Junction. Professor Robert S Michaelsen director of the U L I school of religion delivered the address on Freedom and Conformity while University Provost Harvey H Davis conferred the degrees.
