A Wednesday fire at the W S Rawlings residence in town destroyed the south wing of a heavy frame yellow poplar building. Firefighters and nearby bucket brigades saved belongings and adjacent structures though flames singed rescuers and timber fell. Insurance covered about 2000 on the building. contents were uninsured.
Bob Nickle found a bottle at Leatherwood Creek containing a note dated April 30, 1893 at Bloomingdale Indiana. The note asks a “Little girl” who finds it to write back and laments the long wait for a reply that never came to little Jonnie.
On a Wednesday morning a quarrel erupted between a wily umbrella repairer and Ed King. Captain Ed struck the man in the nose as Marshall Wheeler intervened and ordered the miscreant to leave town, a promise he failed to keep, ending up banished from the city.
The Parke County Medical Society held a Tuesday meeting at Dr. Newhouse’s residence with doctors Dooley Newhouse Bloomer Loeckinge Swoop Gillam Rockville Williams Marshall Pare Martin Bellmore White Rosedale Collins Mecca Washburn Clinton Reeder Montezuma and their wives in attendance. Hudson and Gillum gave talks, Dr Bloomer read an important paper, Mrs Dooley spoke on The Doctors Wife, and the gathering strengthened social and professional ties while praising hosts Messrs Newhouse and Dooley for hospitality.
Pete Mathas, riding a motorcycle, collided with a road hog causing him to swerve into a ditch. He was dragged under a horse and buggy, suffering facial injuries and a bruised side. The bike sustained minor damage and was towed home.
The marriage of C. N. Bradshaw and Luca Anderson occurred last Friday at Bryants office in Rockville. Bradshaw, recently from Terre Haute, plans a shoe repair shop in the Sylvester building near W. H. Kings store. Anderson, longtime Montezuma resident, was raised at Bono where they were childhood sweethearts.
In North Salem the Hayden Orchestra faced disruption when a group of boys caused a disturbance at a Sunday concert. Authorities were alerted and the incident drew local admonishment for the misbehavior in the small town setting.
Sam Bridwell and Anson Roselle of Terre Haute drove to Sugar Creek with local man D. E. Overman. The trio spent Sunday angling for bass and reported fine sport and a jolly good time. They caught 18 bass.
The eight annual Aikman reunion gathered at the Filbeck hotel in Terre Haute on Wednesday with attendees from several localities. The program featured Montezuma Male Quartette with Roy Aikman, and local participants included Hugh Aikman, Roy Aikman and family, W. P. Montgomery and Franz, Dr. O A Newhouse, and Wallace Laverty. Attendees traveled by auto.
Goldie and Sylvia Pickle hosted a fudge party on Tuesday evening. Attendees included Agnes and Helen McGinty, Marie McCord, Hildegraae Maspell, Irene Jesup, Aileen Owens, Mrs J G Hirsbrunner, Walter McCord, Frank McCord, Walter Rierden, Allan Cleaver, Gordon Kay and Robert Gret ncor t.
Mr and Mrs John W Newton entertained at dinner Sunday with guests including Frank Bowman Clinton C Sanders Mecca William Bowman Quincy Bowman Charles Newton and others. The event marked the forty ninth birthday anniversary of Mrs J W Newton.
Rockville business leaders organize a four day rally October 16 to 19. Each of the five parties will present their candidate and a head of the party will deliver a leading speech for the allotted day.
About twenty five members of the high school went on a hay ride Friday night. They met at Prof Hirsbrunner's residence at 7:30 p.m. and traveled to West Union for an ice cream supper. On return they passed through Bloomingdale. Chaperones were Mr. A. G. Cleaver and Miss Agnes McGinty.
