A ragged tramp with graying hair and a toothless grin meets a multimillionaire who passes him. The tramp’s cheerful mercy softens a distant gaze as he says hello and hurries on, leaving both men with a brief, human exchange and a ghostlike memory.
The town election Tuesday polled 292 votes with Labor and Citizens ticket candidates in a spirited contest. A tie between Taylor and Mathas will be decided by coin flip or other means for the next two years. The new board will convene at the first January meeting to begin governing.
Tax supper planned at West Union School House on Friday evening November seven. Everyone invited to attend and bring work to trade or pay for.
Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Montgomery hosted a Hallo we'en En Masque-dance on Friday Oct 31 at Montgomery hall. Yellow and black decorations lit by jack o lanterns and devils heads framed the event. Grand march at 9 o clock with five dances before unmasking followed by a two course lunch and punch. Out of town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Dick Ott Mr. and Mrs. Cullen Ott Mr. and Mrs. Frank Adems Mr. and Mrs. Sidwell Alden Mr. and Mrs. Harris McCord A J S Reed Andrew Pickard Harold Henderson Howard Hancock and Clara Gaebler from Rockville Miss Kelcey Crawfordsville Harry Bailey and son Charleston Wash Mrs Clarkson Cowgill San Benito Texas. About eighty invitations issued.
The Brick Plant, under General Manager Mr. Dumbleton and Supt. Joe Taylor, reports record activity in August September and October. With 180 men employed and biweekly payrolls of 5 000 to 7 000, bricks are produced and sold rapidly. The plant runs efficiently, with lower waste than before, and the 1914 outlook is bright for the company.
A reflective note urges not to save thanks for one day but to scatter appreciation throughout the year. The author considers gratitude to Omnipotence and questions modern social patterns at Thanksgiving.
Reserve Township hosts a Sunday School Convention at the Montezuma Indiana M E Church on November 9 with afternoon program including hymns led by Rev J D Clay and Rev A B Simpson, talks on engaging parents, a mission school segment, recitation, and an evening session with music by Rev J D Ulay Quartet and choir.
Friends and neighbors surprised Mrs. John Naylor Monday night with a pound party and many useful gifts. Attendees included Mess James Lettie Thomas Bea Phillips S P Hancock Joe Burns Edith Isaac D M Scott Isaac Finkbone A W Jones Geo King James Quinlan H B Griffith and the Misses Emma Quinlan and Madge Griffith.
Construction reports brick work finished early this week on the Council Chamber and town hall supply room. Wood work and inside finish are underway with hopes the building will be ready for occupancy by November first. Steel cells have arrived and will be installed after the concrete floor is poured.
The Morris Fairbanks Co. workers lay a new coal dock to replace the burned old one on the C H D tracks. When finished the dock will be more convenient with a single large hopper replacing two small ones. Emma Baird changes address from Danville to Chicago for winter with her son George. A baseball fan who ignores next season’s pennant is not a true fan.

The church lists a Sabbath School at 9 39 a m led by T A Welshans. Sunday services at 10 45 a m and 7 00 p m with biweekly pattern. Thursday prayer meeting at 7 30 p m. Pastor A B Simpson leads the congregation.
The Presbyterian Church holds Sabbath School at 9 30 a m and preaching at 10 45 a m led by Pastor J D Ulay. The notice lists service times and the pastor’s name for the church audience.
Arthur Deitz of Clinton and many neighbors are listed visiting relatives and friends. The piece salutes gatherings, travels to Terre Haute and Indianapolis, farm activity, church meetings, a new town hall change, and a church directory launch. A 9 pound boy born near West Union is noted as a cheerful family milestone.
