A old man recalls courting Mirandy Jane and marrying for a buggy ride. He notes changing times as he plans upgrades from carriage to automobile, and later fantasizes about air travel while his friends pursue new tech, all set in a rural voice with playful dialect.
The government introduces charges on prepaid parcel post items effective July first with a ten cent collection fee and insures contents up to fifty dollars. Addressees will receipt on a tag, yielding a money order to the sender. Third class mail may use new open end government envelopes for one cent postage. These are as safe and priced similarly to regular open top envelopes.
The relief committee reports cash received 146.19 with allocations for groceries 42.07 wood 1.25 coal 2.00 dry goods 28.04 furniture 55.18 repairs 20.00 reliefs 19. A note cites Gertrude Rierdon and Terre Haute.
Commencement exercises filled the opera house with an attentive audience. Seven graduates led by Prof Hirsbrunner and Dr Josh ui Standsfeld of Indianapolis heard an address by Dr Standsfield praised as one of the best ever heard.
James Hieber of Hillsdale sustained a severe arm injury Friday morning after his car was struck by an east bound passenger train crossing on the old State road. He was taken to Montezuma, then Indianapolis hospital where doctors amputated the arm above the elbow. He is reported to be recovering and expected home in ten days to two weeks.
About ten days after Samuel Skeeters became owner he sold the J. H. Ryan property to W. H. King. King plans to use the residence as a home.
Dr Chas Back closes deal through J S Houchin to buy the I A Sharp home. He plans to move in after completing necessary repair work at the property.
Dick Bailey, night watch, surprised two or more burglars attempting to break into Barre Reed er Gent's Furnishing Store. A watcher signaled with a whistle and the band fled, having kicked hinges to gain entry. Earlier, two suspicious hobos were seen loitering. they vanished by Wednesday morning.
The county board of education met and elected Guy Lindley as township tru ant officer. They learned they must levy 1500 dollars yearly to fund a Purdue university approved agriculture teacher, with the state adding 1000 dollars. Some members expressed anger at the compelled levy.
The Montezuma High School trustees decide to retain Prof J G Hirsbrunner for another year. He has shown above average ability and helped make the school strong in the region. Nine students are expected to graduate next year with all likely to complete the course.
Mothers Day will be observed Sunday at the Methodist Church with a morning sermon by the pastor and a special evening program. The carnation is the day’s flower, white if the wearer’s mother is dead and red if living. if carnations are unavailable any flower may be worn.
The Montezuma Dancing club held a Friday night dance at Montgomery hall with local attendees and thirteen couples from Rockville. The event was described as a pleasant evening and enjoyable time.
Mrs Hila McMurtry and a daughter visited Connersville as end guests of Miss Eva, with Alberta among the attendees in a small social gathering.
Mrs. Frank Ara hosts the Friday Club this week while many residents and visitors travel to Terre Haute Indianapolis Greencastle and Rockville. Notables include Mrs. Gus Bailey W E Dee and Miss Verna Stoner plus Miss Mattie Brown purchasing an Overland coupe.
