A speaker recalls last spring's seed catalog choices and planting, noting wind scattered markers and unclear rows. Despite missing labels, beliefs persist that seeds may sprout anyway, while nearby chickens disturb the garden in seventeen states.
Rev J D Ulay delivered the baccalaureate sermon at the M E Church for the M H S graduating class theme The Higher Ideal He urged emulating Christ as the supreme standard and praised students for finishing the course well The church was adorned with flowers and the class colors Old Gold and Blue The Male Quartet and choir performed music to a large crowd.
At the National Drain Vile plant south of Hillsdale Harry Jones suffered a severe accident while levering shale. A chunk shifted and drove the pick through his shoe nearly severing a toe. The doctor reattached the toe and he is improving.
A sizable crowd attended the Friday night event held for the Catholic Church benefit and the financial outcome was successful, though promoters felt the performance did not meet expectations.
The graduating class exercises take place at the Opera house tonight May 1. Dr Joshua Stanfield of Indianapolis will deliver the address. Graduates include Misses Helen McGinty Myra Newell and Masters Robert Gretencort Norville Whitson Melvin Mathas Fred Newton and Charles Rawlings. The Rockville Orchestra will provide music.
Mrs Lou Rohr of Manteno Illinois died April 21 after a brief illness. Her remains were brought to Oakland Cemetery for interment last Thursday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the M E Church with Rev. Dieks officiating. Many friends and relatives from Manteno accompanied them.
Death announced for Mrs. W. W. Downey wife of the C. H. & D. railroad yard engine engineer at this place. Funeral services were held at her residence Sunday afternoon led by Rev. Hicks. Burial at Oakland cemetery with Heathcouic Sisters in charge. A large funeral procession and many floral tributes observed. She leaves six children ages up to fourteen, besides her husband.
Citizens along the main street urge rapid action to oil the road to keep dust down this year. Many residents express favorable views and call for hustling to apply oil soon.
Bert Skeeters was bitten by a dog owned by a Wagoner boy on Monday evening as he traveled to town. The incident triggered memories of a recent mad dog scare, though the chained dog had not bitten anyone and had been secured for months.
Tuesday, Wm Brockway informed readers he accepted a position with Montezuma Mill & Elevator Co and will move to town as soon as he can secure a house. The note welcomes him as a new Montezuma citizen and wishes him success.
The Christian Church will hold morning and evening services on Sunday May 4. The morning sermon title is The Eternal Plan of the Ages and the evening sermon is A Plea for the Defendant. R. R. Ohaver presides as minister.
High school notes show exams for freshmen sophomores and juniors concluding Wednesday with report cards Thursday. Seniors and parents will gather at Mr Hirscrunner’s residence after commencement Thursday night. The Senior finals were held last week with some students making up mechanical drawing work.
The Juniors hosted a lively evening with a vegetable contest won by Miss Jessup and a "pooby" prize for Miss Butcher. A piano duet by Walter Mc Cord and Robert Gretencort followed by solos from Miss Butcher and Goldie Pickel delighted guests. Refreshments included pressed chicken sandwiches and pineapple ice. Miss Jessup later praised, while Miss Butcher earned a pennant in another contest. The card question game elicited laughter as Mr Hirsbrunner posed questions and Miss Butcher gave answers before guests departed near midnight.
Local notes report Miss Lora Reeder visiting Terre Haute on Tuesday alongside several other residents. Numerous short travels to Terre Haute, Clinton, Rockville, and Indianapolis are noted, with residents attending games and meetings and discussing local road work and community events.
The report notes the examination scheduled for Friday morning and compliments the Juniors for their entertaining performance. It expresses hope they will maintain the same quality next year with the same group.
