A local plan proposes discontinuing Montezuma High School and transferring oversight to Reserve Township to cut taxes. Transfers to nearby high schools could raise about 704 dollars for the fund, enabling continuation without higher levies, while reducing local corporate and poll taxes.
Invitations announce the June 25 wedding of Miss Hazel Hendricks of Tangier and Mr. Harry Christopher Machledt of this place. Hazel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Hendricks and once taught in the local public school. Harry, a Montezuman product, is senior partner of Machledt and Huxford, furniture dealers, noted for his mercantile rise.
Ed Foreman known as Burly the River Rat escaped a serious wreck when his wagon overturned on a New Port road. He crawled free with a fractured left arm dressed by a doctor and kept in a sling. He left town Tuesday for repairs and hinted at another run once fixed.
Sunday afternoon a long drought broke with copious rain that revived crops and dulled dust. A strong wind accompanied the rainfall, uprooting trees and tearing roofs in some areas, though local damage was limited to fallen limbs.
A collage of cartoonish verses mocks the costs and quirks of animal life and human vanity. Each quatrain links a creature to a comical consequence whether paying insurance for nine lives or lugging a trunk, ending with a wry line about luck or risk.
The Clinton Majestic Band performed at the pool on Sunday afternoon with an orchestra twilight concert. Attendance was fair in the afternoon but dampened by evening rain. Pool water was in fine shape and visitors enjoyed dips as manager Laverty plans new features and weekly program changes.
Aug Hinote fell from a scaffold while at work near Sealyville and was badly hurt. Geo Hinote and his wife traveled to Terre Haute to visit, where Aug was taken to a hospital and later reported improving though seriously injured.
Six Perdue Canoe Club members along with three University of Illinois students traveled Saturday from Lafayette on an extended river trip toward Vincennes. They plan two to three weeks of scenic river travel with possible continuation down the Ohio to the Mississippi and eventually to New Orleans if conditions allow. The group, described as young women students, will return home after their journey.
