A Chicago Record-Herald piece promotes adopting a baby to lift spirits and ease worries. It suggests brothers and sisters find hope and joy in caring for an infant, noting lullabies, late night walks, and teething moments as life gains charm.
The marriage of Hazel Hendrix of Tangier to Harry Machledt of Montezuma was held June 25 1913 at the Hendrix home. The ceremony featured pastor Miss Martilla Cox and readings by Miss Inez Nixon and others. The couple will reside in Montezuma with many relatives and friends in attendance.
Monday a group described as Gypsies began loitering for alms at Montezuma. A suspected thief attempted to pocket a $3 pin from jeweler D E Overman. The jeweler and a traveling salesman detained him until the marshal intervened. one pin recovered, bond set at $25, and the accused bound for Circuit Court. The crowd fled town toward Highland Hill.
The Montezuma guests arrived home with the bridal party around ten o clock in a ten-load procession. The bride and groom were escorted through the principal streets by carnival band music to the home of the newlyweds with the tune There will be a hot time and other selections.
The carnival faced an injunction and deputy sheriff obstruction after setting up on a vacant lot near T A Welshans residence. By Tuesday night the north end of the pool lot hosted full shows with balloon ascensions and high diving daily. Albert Jerome traveled to Rockville to help Ed build a Beechwood Park auditorium, expected six weeks to finish. Crip Rierdan reportedly got lost in the shuffs Sunday night.
The Montezuma Scouts hiked to Armiesburg on Thursday evening. They pitched tents on the hill overlooking the Armiesburg dam, a spot linked to General Harrison’s march to Tippicanoe. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Overman and others. ice cream cones were handed out. The next morning the group returned to Montezuma.
Jeff Van Fossen leads laborers in tearing down the old wooden bridge over the Raccoon at Armiesburg on Monday. A ford crossing is planned about a half mile west, with at least three months before the new bridge is ready for use.
Montezuma figures a $50 000 drop in personal property value over two years causing a looming funding crisis for the local schools. With total assessed property around $88 000, over a quarter lies with one family. The Board of Review may raise assessments townwide or target individual lists to restore school funding, as levy capacity is exhausted. Local residents and visitors are noted throughout the piece.
Attorney C. G. Powell and Attorney J. M. Johns visited Rockville on business. Dr Reeder and Harry Machledt took a business trip to Rockville. Mrs K. L. Mullen of Clinton visited among friends this week. F. A. Stebbins and family drove to Terre Haute Wednesday. Miss James A. Warner and O. N. Henderson were Terre Haute visitors. Deputy prosecutor Fink of Rosedale appeared on official business. Miss Hazel Hendrick returned home to Tangier after a stay with friends. Fred McIntosh of Chicago arrived for his midsummer vacation with friends and wives. Herb Pawley resumes regular duties after vacation. Mrs Alice Week and her sister Higbee visited locally. F A Cole, Marion Brick, and others mentioned in the notes.
Members of the Late Book Club gathered with Mrs. Ed Van Sickle of Hillsdale last Thursday evening. About twelve local members attended for a pleasant and profitable discussion conducted in autos.
Mayor Ow Shank of Indianapolis is expected to attend and give an address at the Farmers Eighth Annual Picnic at the Brockway club house on Sunday June 29. The event promises many features for a pleasant old fashioned day.
Local farmers report most wheat stacked in shocks as dry weather shortens the oats crop. Despite the drought, wheat looks promising and several growers expect a good yield with Sam Holmes predicting his crop may turn.
