A Chicago Record-Herald verse notes that grandpa remains active and attentive. He avoids idleness, watches a certain lady, and sacrifices sleep for duties. The poem contrasts youth with enduring responsibility and quiet, enduring joy.
The County Council is urged to appropriate 3500 for the grade washed out by the March flood from the Wabash bridge to the C E I tracks. Our earlier report on 20000 flood sums was corrected showing the full 20000 used except about 1000. The C E I railroad will add an overhead bridge once the county covers a 20 foot span. Further details expected in the next issue.
The town has five barber shops with eight barbers. Harry Machledt opened in the former Frakes and Lowry room, returning to his old trade after selling his furniture business and P. O. shop. Last week’s hot dry spell damaged local corn, and rain would not help it.
A letter questions town enforcement of a 8 mph speed limit posted at corporate entrances. The writer cites frequent violations on main streets and warns more accidents will occur without stricter policing and obedience to traffic laws.
The Clinton Italian band of 21 performed Sunday at the pool with high quality music. Attendance surpassed average despite a cool wind reducing bathing speed. Manager Wallace Laverty plans a Moore orchestra date and a return engagement this season for eager patrons.
The Montezuma Mill and Elevator Co shipped a car load of new wheat to Cincinnati and received returns grading it No 1. It is the first Parke County wheat to reach this grade, grown in the Henry Vestal neighborhood. Fertilizer and careful farming influenced the high quality.
Report from the Raccoon River bridge site notes piling for the north approach nearly complete and south end excavation almost finished. Concrete work will begin soon and overall progress is set to accelerate.
Among the visitors at the pool Friday were Ed Shirkey and family of Terre Haute, coming up in Ho's big six Chalmers touring car.
Owen Swaim's field north of Marshall yields 422 bushels on 845 acres at 48 bushels per acre with high quality wheat on timothy sod. The 200 pounds fertilizer and four and a half pounds of twine per acre supported a premium crop, surpassing local estimates and rivaling English yields. Silas Dooley's nearby field also shows strong potential though no complete figure is given.
A five passenger car from Paris Illinois narrowly avoided a serious crash on the Raccoon River ferry at Armiesburg Tuesday morning when the ferry chains slipped as the vehicle climbed the bank. John Underwood and a team with rope and tackle aided in rescue. no injuries and only minor car damage reported.
W. W. Wilhite, a saw mill operator, reports losing two log horses last week due to extreme heat, part of a three month total of five horses. He operates three to six teams hauling logs for mine timbers and various lumber grades.
Mr and Mrs Ben Underwood with daughter Thelma join Dr and Mrs T J Collings and family Mr and Mrs James Baldwin and the Misses Beulah and Anna Smith for dinner at Peter Mathas on Sunday.
On the Alimo hill near Shades Rockville a Linebarger car met a Ford as a Ford let it pass. An Overland from a higher speed rear ended the Ford, overturned, and spilled five occupants. One woman trapped under the car was revived after about an hour. Authorities say careless driving and lack of a warning horn contributed to the crash.
Dr Back and Art Machin attended races in Terre Haute. Bob Wilson of Indianapolis and Mr. and Mrs. Pitman and families visit relatives. Bonnie Cheesewright attended Clinton Carnival. Leon Laverty and Sallie Athern travel for family and hospitalities. License tag delays slow auto registrations. many applied early but await state mail.
