A downtown Magazine street trolley bus and a large trailer truck collided at an intersection in New Orleans today. Twenty five people were rushed to Charity Hospital by ambulances and police cars. The front end of the trolley bus was crushed. Eyewitnesses forced a rear door to rescue passengers including several women unable to walk.
Westbrook Pegler reviews John T. Flynn’s The Road Ahead America’s creeping revolution, praising it as a defining political pamphlet. India's Prime Minister Nehru arrived in Washington for a goodwill visit aboard President Truman's Independence. Officials including Secretary Louis Johnson welcomed him. Nehru will stay at Blair House with the Trumans, then tour New York and other U.S. and Canadian points over nearly a month.
Woody Jongeward and Bob Woodhouse landed their four place plane The City of Yuma at 3 33 p m MST after 1 124 hours 18 minutes of nonstop flying from August 24. They covered 85 000 miles over 9 000 gallons of gasoline and 200 quarts of oil the new champions were greeted by about 15 000 spectators including wives parents and old record holders Dick Riedel and Bill Barris at Yuma County Airport.
The funeral for Louis D. Cohn 50 of Monroe will be at Hixson Brothers Funeral chapel Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Dr. F K Hirsch officiating and burial in the Jewish cemetery. He leaves wife Barbara Cromwell Cohn his mother and others.
A central states storm killed 16 and caused heavy property and crop damage as it moved toward Hudson Bay. Winds over 100 mph toppled a 60-foot hotel chimney injuring four students. Wisconsin and Iowa each reported fatalities and crop losses, with Minnesota hit by 70 mph gusts and 95 mph peaks.
In Tampa Florida on October 11 22 year old Bowling Green trucker William Clemons was chopped to death in what investigators describe as a brutal robbery. A 17 year old Ray Robinson Derr is charged with murder while a second suspect Ray Alvin Mabry 19 is being questioned.
HOUSTON Oct 11 A Farmers Home Administration official urged naming gulf coast hurricane flood counties a disaster stricken area. Approval would let the agency grant disaster loans to low income farmers unable to cover losses from the hurricane and subsequent 10 to 12 inch rains. The request followed tours and reports from 16 counties while flood waters receded.
Police issued bulletins with complete descriptions and diagrams of missing jewels from the T K Jewel Box heist on August 30. Five rings remain unrecovered after a large portion was found in a Monroe police car on September 6, with no arrests to date.
Pittsburgh Oct 11 The governments conciliation service undertakes its largest task yet by attempting to settle twin steel and coal strikes. U S Conciliation Director Cyrus Ching will meet separately with leaders of the CIO United Steelworkers and industry chiefs before the week ends. He also monitors the coal strike as John L Lewis and Philip Murray prepare further talks.
President Truman signed a bill increasing veterans compensation and disability payments by more than 112 million dollars annually. It affects about 2,024,000 veterans from World War I II and the Spanish-American War, expands disability duration for tuberculosis and creates a new schedule of benefits including full presumptive service connection for certain World War I veterans and higher payments for widows with children and for veterans with dependents.
Wilhelm Pieck named first president of East Germany as Moscow resumes civilian rule in the Soviet zone. Chuikov announces transfer of all administrative functions to the new government and Soviet support, while Western Allies denounce the creation as artificial. Ceremony planned for today.
Ivy Jordan was elected district governor of the Louisiana Mississippi West Tennessee Kiwanis district at the state convention in Baton Rouge. He previously served as lieutenant governor after succeeding Cooter Madison, later returning to the post until 1942 when he went into military service. Jordan rose to major, guided civic groups, led Town Hall, chaired the Community Chest Red Cross drive, and held chief roles in Chamber of Commerce work. He is secretary treasurer of Superior Lumber Company and was recently elected president of the Retail Lumber Dealers Association of Louisiana.
Four members of a decorated American Airlines pilot family were found dead in a Fort Worth home. Justice of the Peace Whit Boyd ruled the deaths murder and death by own action, naming Edith S. Walker about 60 as the shooter. The victims were Mrs Elizabeth Finch 33 Penny Finch 8 and Richard Allan Finch 7. Richard Gordon Finch the husband and pilot arrived from Ann Arbor. Police had suspected the grandmother killed two grandchildren and daughter before taking her own life.
Navy weapons expert Capt J H Sides told Congress Russia likely has guided missiles able to locate and shoot down bombers above 40 000 feet. He warned that reliance on the atom bomb and big bombers is folly and Germany’s Nazi anti aircraft rockets now in Russian hands change strategic risk. He said guided missiles in production could outperform 1945 era defenses.
President Truman pressed Democratic congressional leaders at the White House for a swift farm bill pact. Lawmakers left silent after an hourlong session as debates over price supports and parity roiled the bill. Ross declined to specify the bill Truman would sign or veto.
Washington Oct 11 A navy board absolved any person in the naval service of fault or negligence in the death of former Secretary James Forrestal who leaped to his death May 22 at a Bethesda Maryland naval hospital. The five point report found the death was not caused by intent fault negligence or inefficiency by any naval personnel.
Jacque B. Norman prepared the initial hospital survey for a proposed large new building at St. Francis Sanitarium. Groundbreaking is expected in spring 1950. The wing will focus on surgical and pediatric beds with the current surgical suite converted to obstetrical use. Local residents aided the survey.
William Lane Austin, 78, former chief of the U S census bureau, died yesterday in Greenville and was to be buried in Doddsville. An uncle of Senator Eastland, he was a Lee county native educated at Harpersville School and a University of Mississippi graduate. He is survived by his sister Mrs W C Eastland and a brother Dr O O Austin.
