Aluminum firm OKs three year labor contract

NEW YORK AP A three year contract between United Steelworkers of America and the Aluminum Company of America raises wages by 86 cents an hour. ALCOA, the largest U.S. aluminum producer, announces a roughly six percent price increase on most fabricated products starting next September.

The 1st Circuit Court of Appeal ruled the state cannot sue for defamation or bring a suit on behalf of its citizens. Governor McKeithen filed against Time Inc. over a Life Magazine article alleging Mafia influence in state government. The district court had dismissed the suit as no action for a state.

Winn Parish Chief Deputy Sheriff J. J. Crippen, missing since March 25, returned to Winnfield with amnesia. He had been working at a Pensacola gas station for 17 days and was picked up by his two sons in New Orleans after a bus ride from Pensacola.

Senate Committee Strips House Additions From Budget

In Baton Rouge the Senate Finance Committee voted 8 to 7 to remove the $31 million in House additions from the Administration's $1.5 billion general appropriations bill. Chairman Sen. B. B. Rayburn cast the tie breaking vote amid calls for a balanced budget. The panel then approved small amendments including $150,000 for New Orleans and $900,000 for a 2 percent pay raise for state college and university employees. Officials said the administration would accept about $10 million in additions but veto any beyond the original plan.

Pay Hike for Louisiana Judges Upheld by 1st Circuit

The 1st Circuit Court of Appeal upheld the 1970 Louisiana Legislature pay raise for state judges. Plaintiffs Pavey Branton of Shangaloo and two Minden residents argued the increases violated a constitutional clause prohibiting changes during a judge’s term. The court ruled that the word affect does not apply to salary increases but can apply to decreases and noted a two third majority is needed to approve such raises.
