Man Razes Home Over Hiked Taxes in Michigan Township

Edward Koryto, 50, a Michigan Wheel Co. worker, razed his four room home in Plainfield Township after its assessed value jumped by 6800 with a tax rate of 50 per thousand. He says taxes rose about 150 percent to roughly 250 annually, while officials argue the home was worth over 10000 under state law and had been under partial assessment since 1964.

South Vietnam Drives Against Drugs Sees Early Gains

Saigon officials reported encouraging results in a new anti drug campaign aimed at narcotics abuse and smuggling. Since January 1, authorities say 1,040 people have been arrested and 15 pounds of heroin 6.4 pounds of opium and 1716 pounds of marijuana seized. The government blamed heroin flows on Thailand Laos and Hong Kong and said it would seek agreements to curb trafficking while denying U.S. pressure.
