The Louisiana Senate backed a four bill package to accelerate tax collections aiding a teacher pay raise plan. The measures would raise 18.5 million new revenue for 1971 72 and shift tax dates to finance one year of wage increases while lawmakers search for funds for 1972 73.
The Peabody College team presents the Monroe City School survey covering pupil transport, desegregation, extracurriculars, and manpower needs. The six month study funded by Emergency School Assistance proceeds, directed by James W. Whitlock, will be explained by 10 education experts at the Maenroe Civic Center Theater.
Police stormed a Baghdad apartment where two youths held a 14 year old hostage. In a three minute gun battle they freed the girl and wounded both suspects. The girl was hospitalized in good condition. one suspect died.
The Associated Press reports 532 deaths from traffic accidents nationwide over the three day Memorial Day weekend. The National Safety Council had estimated 450 to 590 fatalities from Friday 6 pm to Monday midnight. The peak three day toll on Memorial Day was 597 in 1969.
The National Weather Service reported the highest temperature excluding Hawaii and Alaska as 96 degrees in Laredo Texas on Monday. Tonopah Nevada posted a low of 28 degrees today.
Russell Nedl Beene of West Monroe has been accepted for registration at Harding College for the fall semester. Beene is among 1,700 students from 46 states and 17 foreign countries enrolled as a freshman. In a third such clash in four weeks South Korea claims it sunk a 70 ton North Korean boat off Sohuk san Do near the southwest coast after a three hour chase. All hands on the NK boat believed drowned and one South Korean C46 with seven crew missing. A Freedom Fighter plane was hit but returned to base.
Monroe City Schools board affirmed the Carroll Ninth Grade Center will continue as a ninth grade facility despite a March fire that damaged the front south wing. Officials tested steel beams and plan repairs while considering a future use for the damaged area. About 70,000 students attended the center in 4700, which is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Monroe pools will open to the public at 9:30 a.m. Monday June 7 with Swayze Natatorium Forsythe Park and three recreation center pools at Benoit Johnson and Markles. Admission will be charged to partialy offset operation losses.
