Powers Bills Debated On Governor Authority in Louisiana Senate

In Baton Rouge the Senate opened debate on powers of the governor. Senator Olaf Fink urged enforcing Rule 61 to keep lawmakers off the floor. a bid to let the governor attend was rejected 9-25. McKeithen's floor leaders defended the package, with questions raised about study committee meetings and amendments on levee boards. The package aims to balance state power and allow a second four year term for McKeithen.

U S Planes Step Up Bombing of North Viet Nam

U S Air Force and Navy jets carried the heaviest strikes in four months against North Viet Nam from the border to north of Hanoi. Monroe rector named sixth bishop of Mississippi

The Rt. Rev. John Maury Allin, D.D., bishop coadjutor of the Mississippi Episcopal diocese, was installed as the sixth bishop today at Saint Andrew Cathedral in Jackson. He succeeds the retiring Rt. Adcock backs school sales tax proposal in Ouachita

Monroe lawmaker Ja mar Adcock endorsed a Fifth Congressional District 1 cent sales tax plan to fund teacher salaries. The measure, presenting to the House by Lantz Womack and Benny Christian, would let school boards call an election to raise funds, projected to exceed 5 million annually districtwide. He urged officials in Ouachita and Jackson parishes to back the proposal.

Nineteen Lake Providence youths in wreck on La. 2

A two vehicle collision near Lake Providence sent nineteen local youths riding in the back of a truck tumbling from the vehicle. James Edmund Murphy, 34, of Bastrop, was jailed on charges of reckless driving and no driver's license. Several injured youths were hospitalized, with three transferred to Conway Memorial Hospital in Monroe and the rest staying in East Carroll Parish.
