President Harding at Arlington Memorial Day exercises urged reduced armament and a global role in building peace. He spoke of duty, national honor, and the need to avoid war while supporting peaceful dispute resolution and the care of veterans. He warned against pacifism while urging leadership in promoting lasting peace.
Major Roland W. Pinger of the U S A among fourteen foreigners held by Paotzuku bandits urges armed intervention by great powers. He questions American public opinion and Japanese attitude while predicting a long affair and hostage risk. He favors civilizing bandits and notes potential waning interest after return home. The first carload of 1200 watermelons arrived from Florida and was distributed by Sugar Brothers via Gregg and Mckkenzie to local dealers and caterers as watermelon parties remain popular in town. Memorial Day events in Monroe honor nation’s heroes with a 4 30 p m assembly on the court house square led by Leonidas Barkdull Faulk Post of the American Legion. Veterans from Civil War Spanish American World War and other groups join in services at the Confederate monument and graves. Poppies are sold to aid disabled soldiers and grave decoration. City and parish buildings close for the day.
President Harding headlined Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery honoring war dead. G A R officers and American Legion leaders joined other patriotic groups in ceremonies, with Mrs. Harding dedicating an elm tree near the tomb of the unknown soldier and Acting Secretary Davis urging continued defense training.
Associated Press reports American Legion posts worldwide observe Memorial Day by gathering at cemeteries to lay flowers and hold appropriate ceremonies honoring fallen servicemen from battles such as the Argonne and actions across the Pacific. The observance spans both U S and European cemeteries as members commemorate the war dead.
Memorial services will be held over world war veterans graves at Pineville National Cemetery this afternoon and later at the U S Veterans Hospital at Camp Stafford near Alexandria. Tonight former Governor J Y Sanders will spoke as principal speaker at a memorial program hosted by Camp Stafford and Alexandria Legion posts.
In Shreveport on May 30 a Memorial Day observance at the opera house honored veterans from all wars. Organized by Community Service the American Legion and the Veterans Bureau, with patriotic societies represented. Mayor Thomas proclaimed a half holiday. The American Legion auxiliary sold poppies to aid Louisiana veterans still in hospitals.
Washington May 30 The state department released a Memorial Day exchange between President Harding and King Albert of Belgium. The Belgian king praises U S sacrifice and vows enduring friendship while Harding replies that the nations share a grateful tribute to their dead and to liberty.
Will Flannigan Sam Head and Tom Sturtevant all Ouachita parish men were arrested in connection with the killing of Sherman Younger near Bacon Hill six miles from Monroe. Flannigan and Head allegedly dragged Younger from a buggy and attempted to punish him while Younger resisted and a gun fired wounding him. The pistol discharge also struck Head, and the trio then pursued Younger in a second auto. the incident led to Younger's death and the story continues on page six.
Twenty four drivers from five nations roared away at 10 am in the Indianapolis 500 race. At the halfway mark Milton led with Hartz second and Werner third as Murphy battled tire issues. A crash injured spectators and Alley suffered serious injuries.
Alexandria was chosen as the site for the next Grand Lodge convention of the Knights of Pythias at the closing session. Henry M. Addison of Kentwood was named grand chancellor.
Benny Leonard defeats Pinkey Mitchell in a ten round no decision at the Dexter Pavilion Chicago amid a riot as bystanders clash with police. Referee UD Miller sustains melee while Leonard’s supporters clash with Mitchell faction. ruckus follows after the fight ends and ringside officials are attacked.
Frank Goodwin 18, a Cumberland Telephone Co operative in Monroes construction dept, drowned at the Natatorium pool last evening after entering with friends. Evans, a companion, found his body wedged at the pool ladder. Lifesaving efforts failed. Drs. Adams and Graves could not revive him.
Richmond, May 30. The Sons of Confederate Veterans announced Richmond as the permanent headquarters. Walter L. Hopkins of Richmond is named adjutant in-chief and chief of staff. Leo Miller of Richmond is appointed to the executive committee replacing Hopkins.
