Teheran reports a major earthquake causing extensive loss of life and destruction across the Turbat-l Haidari area in Khorasan. The shocks lasted hours. Turbat-l Haidari lies about sixty five miles southwest of Meshed, with valleys and deserts nearby.
In Atlanta on May 29 the Kiwanis Clubs International held its seventh annual convention draft. Denver was virtually chosen as the 1924 convention host while contenders for 1925 included Seattle Portland and St Paul. Elwood J Turner of Chester Pa emerged as a leading candidate for international president amid reports on classification education and inter club relations. Robert N Young urged tighter membership limits to curb multi member professions in local clubs.
More than 500 men including forest rangers battled forest and bush fires across Northern Minnesota. Rain was expected later to help extinguish the flames, with fires reported from Fal Lake Vermilion Lake to Coleraine and Grand Rapids. The Park Rapids Itasca State Park area required heavy effort to control as crews worked to keep flames in check.
More than a dozen candidates compete to fill the late Senator Knuts Nelson’s seat in the June 18 primary as nine filings already arrive. In Washington, evidences from the veterans bureau inquiry have been sent to the Department of Justice for possible criminal action.
Indianapolis May 29. Alvin Owsley national commander of the American Legion delivers a Memorial Day proclamation urging homage to war dead. He praises their sacrifice and calls on all Americans to rededicate to the ideals for which they died.
The Shipping Board will study John W Slack's offer of 1 051 billion dollars for the entire U S government merchant fleet including ships and related property. An initial payment of 51 million would be due in October 1928 with 50 million yearly installments. Slack promises to operate lines at or above current service and provides a 1 million dollar bond to back the contract.
Governor Parker and Senator Ransdell of Louisiana will be the principal speakers at the Louisiana division meeting of the Southern Tariff Association tomorrow. Representatives from Texas and Mississippi divisions are expected, with Association president Johan H. Kirby of Houston present.
E L Hughes, a famed oil operator from El Dorado, was arrested in Muskogee after forging drafts to steal 6,000 dollars from Tulsa banks. Police described plans for a regional bank swindle and found the cash on him at his arrest. Forgery charges were filed by the Tulsa banks.
Clarence Cutter remained in serious condition after a lightning bolt struck a community house near Amite during a farming district dance. Irving Cutrer Marjorie Cothran were knocked unconscious and Henry Lewis sustained minor neck burns. Basil Galiano of New Orleans defeated Pat Moran in a fifteen round bout.
Washington, May 29. Shriners who break capital law during Shrine week may face a special Masonic court for misdemeanors. Nineteen justices with L. R. Hitt as chief justice will preside, aided by fifty prosecutors and a 23-member clerical staff under William S. Adkins. Serious cases may still go to regular courts.
Oklahoma City faces a worsening flood as the North Canadian river rises two feet and floods southern districts. More than 1,000 people are homeless, one life is confirmed lost, and a volunteer rescuer died in Walnut Grove. Refugees are sheltered at the city auditorium and Salvation Army premises.
Monroe Lions Club expressed strong support for a new traffic bridge over the Ouachita River after a talk by City Engineer R. B. Reynolds. He warned the current bridge is badly deteriorated and could become unusable within months, risking serious accidents without swift action.
Thirty degrees were awarded at Millsaps College during graduation exercises in Jackson Mississippi on May 29. Barney Eaton, alumnus and railroad counsel, delivered the baccalaureate address.
Clara Phillips, convicted of murdering Alberta Meadows with a hammer, arrived in New Orleans on the steamship Copan at 1 15 p m on the first leg of her journey from Honduras to Los Angeles. A crowd gathered as she disembarked unhandcuffed, escorted by the chief of police and a deputy sheriff, with plans for an interview once at police headquarters.
The city of Monroe issues a Memorial Day proclamation calling residents to observe May 30 and pause work from 4:00 to 5:30 pm to honor soldiers and Confederate Decoration Day. The ceremony, at the Confederate monument in DeSmid Street Cemetery, is led by local American Legion and survivors of World War I. Mayor Arnold Bernsteils signs the notice on May 29, 1993.
Essen May 29 Burgomaster opens talks with communists and workers to form a workers police to assist firemen under an arrangement similar to Gelsenkirchen. The communist control committee pushes shopkeepers to keep prices down to the committee’s mark. French authorities deny reports that Bochum workers received arms from France.
Alexandria lawyer John H Overton announced in Alexandria on May 29 that he will not be a gubernatorial candidate. He offered no new remarks beyond stating the decision is final, noting pressure to run was resisted due to the health problems of his law partner John C Blackman and the likelihood he cannot resume practice soon.
Birmingham police seek to solve the murder of Charley Graffeo, latest victim among a forty two month axe assault series that has killed nineteen and injured seventeen. Graffeo was found with a crushed skull and throat slashed, a blood covered axe nearby, and valuables stolen from his store.
Dispatches from Tsao Chwang report a warmer tone in talks to free fourteen foreigners held by bandits on Paotzuku mountain. Chinese officials appear more sincere in placating the bandits, who respond in kind.
