Steamer Ryndam Collides With Freight Vessel
The Holland America Line steamer Ryndam carrying 77 passengers collided with the freight steamer Joseph J. Cuneo fifteen miles off Nantucket in heavy fog. All Ryndam passengers and 160 crew joined the Cuneo, then were transferred to the battleship South Carolina. The Ryndam rapidly sank. warships and the Atlantic fleet aided as the vessel drifted toward Ambrose Channel.
