Lieutenant Oliver Fo Naquin of Alexandria La commanded the stricken Squelus and was the last to enter the escape bell on its final ascent and the last to step onto the Falcon's deck carrying the log hook after the rescue mission in Portsmouth NH May 3.

Dr. L A Masterson public health physician with the Louisiana state board of health based in New Orleans died instantly in a car crash near Atlanta Georgia where he had been an officer in the reserve corps. The body was sent to New Orleans for funeral and interment. His wife Miss Sadie Schmalinski of Monroe was informed of the news.

The Associated Press reports five people died in accidents across Louisiana and Mississippi. Warren H. Prouse, 48, was electrocuted in Pascagoula while his family watched. Albert Griffin, 11, drowned in the Pearl River near Jackson, but his brother Jimmy, 13, was saved by Breeland Walker. William R. Torres, 46, fell from a school construction site in New Orleans and impaled himself. A car and farm truck crash near Tunica killed Jimmy Ferguson, five months old, with relatives injured. Alphonse Arnona Jr., 36, of Belle Chasse, crushed between a boxcar and cradle at Seatrain wharf.
In Portsmouth New Hampshire Admiral Cole says 33 survivors were hoisted from the Squalus as rescue work resumes on the after section. Divers begin recovering bodies of the 26 still missing while crews repair the rescue bell and prepare the sub for further operations.
In New York May 2 a dramatic federal court scene emerged as former judge Martin T. Manton faces a bribery plot. John L. Lotsch testified he gave Manton two payments of five thousand dollars each in Manton's chambers as he conspired to sell judicial favors.
