Senate efforts to repeal the undistributed profits tax intensify after abandoning compromise ideas. President Roosevelt’s remarks on debt and a House bill to extend government bond limits shape a tense Capitol Hill debate.
London May 2 Queen Mary suffered injury to an eye when her automobile overturned yesterday and spent a restless night, doctors said today. A bulletin noted her majesty's general condition is satisfactory and she will be 72 Friday. The queen mother is under care at Marlborough House with physicians including Sir Richard Cruise and Sir John Weir attending.
Richard A. Palmer, 26, a Liberty County life-term inmate, was fatally stabbed in the hallway of the main prison building at An Gleton Texas. About 400 fellow convicts stood nearby as authorities opened an investigation. Palmer died after being carried to the prison hospital. He had prior larceny and theft terms and received the life sentence for murder in 1938.
King George and Queen Elizabeth arrived in Winnipeg for Empire Day ceremonies amid rain and crowded displays. The royal train came from Fort William and Port Arthur, with spectators lining the parade route and an American Legion delegation present. The king spoke via the Empire day broadcast, the first world hookup message from a British king away from England.
Robert E. Robinson of Shreveport was elected state commander of the Louisiana department of Disabled American Veterans at the annual New Orleans meeting. A resolution urged veterans receive civil service preference in state examinations. Other officers named include Floyd, Simmons, Koch, Williams, Fournet, Evans, Ransom, McLeod, Morel, and a slate of executive committeemen from New Orleans, Shreveport, Lafayette, St Martinville, Pineville, and New Iberia.
Fourty British sailors landed yesterday at Pootung to guard a British owned cotton mill but withdrew after a Japanese marine detachment appeared and protested to the British consulate. Pootung sits on the Whangpoo river opposite Shanghai and is now under Japanese influence. Hongkong reports two Japanese destroyers sighted.
Philadelphia detectives report a new arrest in the syndicate mass poisoning probe bringing custody to 29 with seven more sought. The unnamed woman was questioned after tips from Mrs Rose Carina known as Kiss of Death. Carina, 45, wife of a deceased man, faces murder charges in one death among over 100 believed caused by the syndicate for insurance money. Investigators say many tips are being reviewed though some delay has occurred.
Southampton England May 24 The Yankee clipper began its return leg inaugurating regular service across the North Atlantic taking off at 9 19 am Eastern Standard Time today for Marseille France.
British cabinet weighs accepting Moscow terms for a mutual aid pact with the Soviet Union and Britain and France. Foreign Secretary Halifax, in Geneva, reported progress toward a three power alliance to protect smaller states. Bonnet, Paris mediator, reported back on the talks as Daladier and ministers gauge the pact’s scope.
United States Attorney presents new witnesses in the Martin T. Manton conspiracy trial in New York. Alfred F. Reilly testifies he paid 39,850 to Fallon, described as Manton's bag man, for a patent case won in Manton's court. Fallon received 500 for a World Series box and 3,500 for taxes, with other payments cited.
Grover Cleveland Bergdoll the World War draft dodger will arrive in New York tomorrow aboard the steamer Bremen. His attorney told the senate military affairs committee Bergdoll will be surrendered at once to military officials. Bergdoll's mother sister wife and two children attended the committee hearing amid House enacted draft legislation.
A Monroe and West Monroe Chamber delegation with Winnsboro and St. Joseph reps will meet Governor Richard W. Leche on Tuesday at 11 am to press for a hard surfaced road between Winnsboro and St. Joseph. The effort, led by H. B. Landis and German Baker, seeks state backing to replace the current gravel highway and avoid detours via Tallulah.
The Louisiana public service commission urged the federal power commission to join a joint inquiry into gas rates charged by Interstate Natural Gas and United Gas Pipeline. The state alleged Interstate imposed unjust charges on utilities and municipalities while United billed other utilities excessively, especially to domestic customers, and both firms challenged the commission's jurisdiction.
At Portsmouth New Hampshire on May 24 naval routine eased anxiety during the Squalus submarine rescue effort. Navy headquarters coordinated fast reports for land sea and air rescuers while relatives of crew gathered quietly, and weather sent showers and a light east wind over the yard.
King George and Queen Elizabeth met Ojibway chiefs and families during their Canadian tour at Fort William. An encampment of about 50 Ojibways drew their interest as a child strapped to a mother's back prompted lighthearted questions. The navy released the list of officers and men aboard the submarine Squalus as divers rescued seven crew members from a depth of 240 feet. Names include Lt. O F Naquin Alexandria LA and Lt. W T Doyle Jr Baltimore exec officer. Civilians Don Smith Detroit and Harold Preble naval architect. The rescue marked the first actual save from that depth with a diving bell rescue completed within five hours.
Francis Xavier Ransdell 78 longtime East Carroll Madison and Tensas jurist died in Baltimore Maryland Relatives in Lake Providence say he retired January 1 1938 after 37 years on the bench Survivors include his widow four daughters sister and the former senator Joseph E Ransdell of Lake Providence
The Squalus rescue recovered seven men after 29 hours trapped in the crippled submarine. A rescue chamber raised through 240 feet of water brought them to the surface, with Lt. J. C. Nichols of Chicago among the survivors. Immediate plans were made for another descent to rescue the remaining 52 crew members still below.
Mrs. Robert Franklin Gibbs learns her sea bound husband is trapped at the bottom of the sea in the submarine Squalus. Romanian born and married in Shanghai, she travels from Lexington to Portsmouth after union with F O Barett, newspaper printer, conveys the news in headlines.
