Troops of the new American army have arrived in the British zone in northern France and are finishing training among British forces. In Bern May 17 Herr Hausmann of the Progressive party told the Württemberg diet the fifth winter of the war is inevitable. He urged Germans to brace for disappointment rather than expect victory this summer.
Louie A. Powell of Morehouse parish sues W. D. Fairbanks Jr and Mrs. Margaret Fairbanks for 5000 alleging libel slander and false arrest. Powell says April arrest in Monroe followed a phone report from Mrs. Fairbanks claiming he stole a diamond ring. He was released after she found the ring. He claims damages to his reputation.
Fd Evans a 32 year old white farmer south of Rayville Richland parish died at St Francis sanitarium from a fractured skull suffered in a log rolling altercation near Rayville days earlier. Windham and his son were arrested and may face murder charges amid reports of prior bad blood between the parties.
Washington May 17. Today's casualty list shows 106 names with 4 gas poisoning cases. The tally includes 15 killed in action, 6 died of wounds, 4 from gas poisoning, 1 wounded severely, 12 wounded slightly, 60 missing, and 8 others. Four officers are listed.

A report compiled from German sources shows Germany’s birth rate drop from 1915 to 1917 equaling about 2,000,000 lost infants. The commission recommends compulsory marriage before age twenty, per a Daily Express dispatch from Amsterdam.
Dr. Oscar Dowling, president of the Louisiana State Board of Health, ordered the Rapides parish court house closed for thorough cleaning and sanitation. The action halts all public offices in the building while repairs are made. Dowling had indicated he would visit Monroe soon to review conditions locally.
