Reports from Colorado City Texas indicate a tornado swept a strip of land near Abilene causing extensive damage. Officials say up to fifty people may be dead with many injured as hail and heavy rain hinder relief efforts. crop and livestock losses run into millions.
A tornado eight miles from Colorado City Texas killed Joe Richbourg and his two children last night. Reports say several others died at Lorraine near Colorado City and Mrs. W. S. Shelton and two children were killed at Westbrook. The storm path extended about twenty five miles with a 200 yard wide swath, striking between 4 and 6 o'clock. Local lines were down and physicians from nearby towns rushed to the scene.

New York May 14 A woman may be named as the suspected author of scurrilous letters alleged to defame Mrs Allan A Ryan Mrs Albert R Gallatin and seven other social leaders George Maxwell the internationally known music publisher and head of ASCAP faces indictment He plans to return from London to confront charges His supporters say a woman wrote the letters and Maxwell could not sign checks at the time due to illness The case references prior poison pen letters received by Maxwell and a Havana trip connected to similar notes.
West Monroe residents prepare to vote Tuesday on a 165000 dollar bond issue to fund a sewer system, water works upgrades, and repayment of old debts. The plan, supported by physicians and health officials, includes 87000 for sewers, 57000 for wells, and : debt retirement over 40 years at six percent interest. Mayor Bell and councilmen express confidence in progress and necessity.
A long distance message from Sweetwater Texas at 11 a m reports a tornado striking between Lorraine and the water tank three miles east in Mitchell county. The death toll may reach four with about eight injured. All victims are said to be farmers.
Rome May 14 Italy responds to the German note on reparations by stressing urgency and tying debt settlement to reconstruction costs in invaded regions. The note rejects Bonar Law’s Paris scheme as insufficient and condemns the German proposal as incomplete and vague compared with British plans.
A Sunday night collision on Dinkgrave Lane left Richard Moore severely injured with a skull fracture and several fractures. C Rose was slightly hurt, his wife and daughter badly injured, and Sarah Jackson suffered a broken collarbone. all taken to St Francis sanitarium.
Amiens France May 14 Six persons including a New Yorker named Schwab were killed when a passenger airplane crashed at Conty about thirteen miles south of Amiens.
Mr Bill Rife, field man for a major oil company, recalls a mysterious event near Smackover. He notes missing gear reappeared days later tied to a tree, including a saddle, bridle, slicker, gloves and tools, echoing a Rip Van Winkle like twist in a conservative, home loving worker's account.
European passengers were terrorized and robbed when pirates seized the Tai Shan near Swatow. Disguised as passengers they overpowered the crew, sailed unseen for hours, then loaded loot into a junk at a creek mouth. The chief officer was wounded, and most travelers lost money and belongings while cargo remained intact.
London May 14 The British government publicized its note to Germany on reparations signed by Lord Curzon secretary for foreign affairs It calls the German memorandum a disappointment and urges a more precise plan and broader readiness to negotiate with allies to resolve the international peril
Cleveland officers report Patrolman Dennis Griffin, who had arrested a man Friday morning, was bound, shot twice in the head and once in the abdomen, and found buried in a shallow grave 300 feet from remnants of his charred clothing. The killer remains at large.
The War Department seeks relatives of Jesse Lee Johnson who enlisted at Camp Pike Arkansas in June 1918 and died in October 1918. Johnson gave Monroe as his address. relatives or those who know them should contact the American Legion in Monroe for war insurance purposes.

Chicago May 14 The United States railroad labor board resumes work and hears reports of a coordinated union push for wage hikes possibly totaling 1500 million annually. Pending cases include Philadelphia and Reading with unions seeking a ten percent rise plus restoration of pre July 1 levels.
Monroe voters will cast ballots in a municipal run off on Tuesday for the race of commissioner of streets and parks. Polls open six a.m. to seven p.m. with the same election officials and polling places as the first primary.
London May 14 British officials assess Russia's reply as an about face in Moscow attitude toward Britain. Lord Curzon demands complete redress and refuses protracted explanations while Moscow proposes a plenipotentiary conference to discuss Anglo Russian relations and a three mile limit. The Daily Herald reports Russia claims Britain favored secrecy and cites fabricated charges, urging equality in talks to avert a rupture and ease abnormal relations.
