Mississippi White and Black leaders call joint county meetings to curb the exodus of negro labor, with nine thousand already leaving since last fall. In Louisiana, the labor supply exceeds demand and migration to northern centers is not significant despite ample jobs.
In Birmingham Alabama leaders from the Negro press and ministers unite with large employers to stem a manpower drain from mines and mills. The Alabama Mining Institute disseminates wage and health data to attract workers, noting district average pay near wartime highs. About 27 workers a day leave the district with 800 from Bessemer and 150 from Gadsden moving north in recent weeks.
In Columbia on May 12 W T Willingham who heads the U S employment bureau said the labor situation in South Carolina is the most serious in years if not in state history. He noted a shortage of labor across all kinds of work.
