A Chicago economist told business leaders that centralization of financial power must be abolished to curb the money trust. He argued for immediate reforms to break up concentrated economic control.
Richmond May 14. University of Chicago professor J Laurence Laughlin advocates a National Reserve Association to decentralize credit and mobilize reserves, arguing centralization risks panics and Wall Street control of funds. He calls for reforms from Congressional inquiry to curb interlocking directors and promote legitimate credit for all business lines.
A petition is circulating to urge Legislature to pass the Monroe charter bill creating a commissioner government. The section allowing immediate removal of mayor and council and Governor appointment of a commission is condemned as revolutionary and unwarranted. Citizens are urged to withhold signatures until they study its meaning.
State notes Monroe charter proposals by Senator Hood and Mr Bryant with a mayor and four at large commissioners plus department structures. Discussion covers mayoral salary figures, city attorney and engineer pay, and gubernatorial appointment powers amid broad reform talk.
New Orleans May 14 United States Engineers report a crevasse fifty five miles below the city on the west river bank. Captain Sherrell Chief Engineer departed on the government boat Message to oversee cribbing of the break as laborers work to prevent orange grove damage in sparsely settled country.
Washington May 14 A revolt against the Gag Rule forced immediate consideration of the Clayton Anti Injunction Bill. Minority Leader Mann with Norris Lenroot Cannon and Dazzell opposed shutting the minority out and won a modified rule granting more parliamentary latitude.
Washington May 18 The House adopted 237 to 39 a joint resolution to amend the Constitution permitting direct popular election of Senators. The measure, already passing the Senate, goes to the President to sign and publish. Opposition from Southern lawmakers centered on federal supervision and fears of negro domination.
Nebraska State Baseball League opens its championship season with games in four cities. The circuit includes Kearney Fremont York Superior Hastings Seward Grand Island and Columbus and runs from May 14 to September 38.
