The coming week features Republican and Democratic state and district conventions across multiple states led by Wyoming California Utah New Hampshire and more plus the Socialist party national convention in Indianapolis and other gatherings including labor and religious meetings nationwide. Clarence Darrow trial in Los Angeles and battleship Texas launch at Newport News are also noted.
Robert Landry, after 34 years as clerk in the Louisiana House, declares his “hat in the ring” for another term as four challengers emerge. Oswald A. Fournet, son of ex State Treasurer A V Fournet, attacks Landry citing opposition to reforms and past manipulation of House procedures by a political clique.

The Supreme Court is asked to halt the Interstate Commerce Commission order effective June 1 that would set westbound rates from Shreveport to Texas equal to Texas rates. Railways claim the order costs $500000 annually and constitutes confiscation and exceeds federal jurisdiction over intrastate rates.
New Orleans and surrounding towns faced a historic storm with high winds hail and heavy rain. The Mississippi River rose to about 21.9 feet, flooding streets and overwhelming levees while sandbags and guards protected the riverfront. Monroe reports similar downpours and flooding with the Ouachita river rising.

New Roads residents endure in place as the flood situation remains unchanged after a severe rain and wind storm overnight. Most locals refuse to evacuate, choosing to protect their homes and belongings amid continuing weather.
After last night's severe storm in Baton Rouge residents faced alarm and hopelessness as waters rose over embankments yet no serious cracks appeared. Citizens worked through the night and by morning levees were still holding, sparking renewed determination.
New Orleans dispatch notes alarming reports on the Plaquemine levee with laborers and barges rushing material to the site. Capt. Logan of the United States Relief Corps sent rescue boats from Baton Rouge to be ready if a break occurs. Another weak spot near Morgana and a spot six miles south of Baton Rouge are reported as non urgent.
New Orleans report states the Mississippi River below Vicksburg will continue to rise with only minor changes expected to alter the flood trend.
The Weather Bureau bulletin warns of increasing flood stages due to heavy rains north and south of Natchez. Predicted levels, contingent on levee integrity and winds, include Baton Rouge at 48.9 feet Donaldsonville at 35 feet and New Orleans at 21.5 to 22 feet.
Washington May 11 Major Charles Lynch reports that progress in first aid to the injured by the American Red Cross over the last four years surpasses all prior periods though the U S remains behind many nations. About 150 000 persons were instructed last year by the government. President Taft and Mrs Taft hosted a White House garden party for delegates. Empress Marie Feodorovna will receive thanks from Congress. About 9000 in prizes will be awarded for the best invention aiding Red Cross workers.
Minneapolis debates whether Methodist Episcopal Church members should govern amusements by conscience. A sub-committee favored striking the discipline clause allowing self rulings, sparking protests. The full committee adjourned without a decision as bishops urged abolishing the section but denied endorsing such amusements.
Local leaders and State Anti-Saloon League plans hold a Monday evening gathering at the First United Church to discuss statewide prohibition and petitions sent to Louisiana legislators. Dr. S A Smith and Rev J B Lawrence will speak among other advocates about submitting liquor prohibition to a public vote.
