Two men dressed as clowns robbed the Gardiner branch of First National Bank in Laurel Mississippi during the city celebration. About $5000 was taken, and the robbers fled in a car with Grenada County license plates. No customers were present. staff were at their stations as the theft occurred.
President Eisenhower plans a major public campaign to back his legislative program and budget. He will use weekly news conferences and a nationwide radio television address, with the next news briefing set for Wednesday. Strong GOP and Democratic reactions foreshadow a tense fight in Congress.
The Louisiana State Supreme Court paused the dispute between Monroe and the Public Service Commission over supervision of United Gas rates. The case, tied to city ordinances and state law, regards gas rates for Monroe and West Monroe with last franchises granted in 1947. The court previously sided with both cities and then with the commission, and a third ruling is awaited.
In Paragould Arkansas a dynamite blast killed Edna Sexton about 36 and her 5 year old son Charles Bittinger in their bed. Police seek her estranged husband Charles Sexton for questioning. The blast damaged the two story house and deepened a two foot crater. A July divorce hearing is scheduled for the Sextons separation noted six weeks prior.
More than a dozen sparrows marooned on a Kerr McGee oil rig off the Louisiana shore for seven months show signs of neurosis. They cannot see land and rarely fly, nesting on the construction rig that drifted into the Gulf of Mexico near Cameron last November. Workers feed them scraps.
Louisiana’s poultry sector, a 35 million dollar yearly trade, has shown more progress in the past seven years than before 1950. Dr. Ewell P. Roy, LSU economist, told the 15th annual Louisiana Poultry Improvement Association convention that the industry’ s strength comes from lower costs and prices, new markets, and entrepreneurial freedom without bureaucratic price controls.
A four member family from Tia Juana Venezuela arriving in the U S yesterday were stopped for a minor incident on Louisville Avenue and then hosted at Monroe City Hall for Tourist Appreciation Day. They were greeted by Mayor W L Howard and Chamber officials, served coffee, and began a city tour. They will stay at the Virginia hotel and enjoy meals and entertainment options tonight.
Slater says Northeast Louisiana State College will not challenge A. P. Tugwell's rejection of a 2.3 acre land purchase for 75,000 near Monroe. Tugwell notes a nearby tract cost 40,000 and cites past sale prices. Slater seeks legislative funds to finance dormitory land and expansion at the campus along College Avenue and Bayou DeSiard.
Joe Kelly of Oak Grove returns from an Africa trip and will address Covenant Presbyterian Church men’s club Friday at 6 30 p.m. Fred Petty urges reservations by Thursday noon. Dinner will be in the church educational room. Mrs. Gardner Nagle injured in an Easter Terrell auto crash is transported to St. Francis Hospital for recovery from multiple injuries. Robert Kellogg named to Baylor School dean’s list in Chattanooga Tennessee.
H M James resigned from Ouachita Parish Draft Board No 161 after protesting a February 1956 directive that makes an illegitimate child from conception grounds for draft deferment. He and other board members opposed the rule, citing that it benefits promiscuity and targets predominantly colored registrants. James called for immediate action to correct the policy and voiced strong protest to federal and state officials.
Unofficial reports claim Nicaraguan troops crossed into Cifuentes in southeastern Honduras at 5:30 am. The clash comes amid talks with an OAS peace team on troop withdrawals from the Segovia Coco River area.
Natchitoches and upper Rapides parishes bore the brunt of the Red River flood as crests neared. Guards and volunteers sandbagged Campti while roads, including U S 84 and U S 71, faced closures. East Point waited for recession after crest.
Jim Herren of West Monroe was elected area district governor of the Louisiana district of Civitan International at the annual convention in New Orleans last weekend. Several Civitan members from the Twin Cities attended.

Voters in Ouachita parish weighed a five year continuation tax with only 119 ballots cast by noon representing 250000 assessed value. About 10000 property owners outside Monroe city limits are eligible with many expecting higher turnout after 6 pm. Voting sites list multiple precincts across wards and include Swartz Monroe Sterlington and Columbia Road locations.
The State Sovereignty Commission, despite a dissenting member who warned the agency still promotes segregation, voted to donate state land for a veterans hospital in Jackson Mississippi. Across Texas the Brazos River rose above banks flooding thousands of acres, the day’s notable high water event. In Detroit, Charlie Dressen was fired as manager of the Washington Senators and third base coach Henry Arthur Lavagetto was appointed to replace him.
Louisiana wildlife officials plan a daytime helicopter operation to rescue about 500 deer stranded by Mississippi River floods at the Delta migratory refuge. Federal aid coordinator John Newsom notes previous successful attempts and plans to relocate the deer to replenishment areas in North Louisiana.
