Infants Struck By Strange Illness At Lake Wales
In Lake Wales Florida two newborns remained in treatment for a mysterious illness marked by a come and go blue tinge. Three other infants died after exposure to a diaper marking dye later linked to coal tar derivatives. Miss Bree Kelly hospital superintendent said doctors suspect poisoning from analine dyes and an autopsy result was awaited. The illness began June 21 after new dye marked diapers were used and mothers reported a blue discoloration that appeared and vanished. The American Medical Association Journal earlier urged precautions against such dye poisoning and recommended boiling and drying diapers after stamping to fix the dye.

New Orleans Milk Bacteria Counts Raise Safety Questions
The New Orleans board of health reported 39 percent of 729 milk samples showed bacteria counts above legal limits. Sanitation Officer Victor St Blanc noted the city uses methylene blue testing, not plate counts, to gauge pasteurization readiness, with color retention indicating safety, while milk loses color much faster at pasteurization stations. Local and state officials agree transport isn’t the issue, but trouble occurs between cooling and pasteurization tests. Readings involve milk from Franklinton and other Louisiana towns plus Magnolia, Mississippi.

Atom scientists lack instruments for extreme reactor tests
Atomic scientists say existing gauges fail under high temp and radiation. Gener al Electric researchers David Cochran and C A Hansen told the American Society of Mechanical Engineers that a fur nace environment requires long life, remotely maintenable instruments resistant to neutron and X radiation and utterly leak tight to prevent radioactive leaks in experimental plants.
