Higher rents may be allowed under rent control act
Washington June 27 about a million landlords may seek rent ceiling increases under the 1949 rent control act. Housing Expeditor Tighe E Woods said his offices have handed out about a million application blanks and that four new orders may raise rents for landlords who add services or improvements. Local rent directors are given wide leeway for remodeling decorating and new equipment. Woods cited that spending 100 on each of 14 000 000 dwellings could inject 1 400 000 000 in jobs and sales. The act sets target net operating income thresholds for small and large landlords with different permitted increases. Local offices are overwhelmed with inquiries, and about 1 000 000 forms distributed but not yet acted on.
