Flood Irrigation System Trial On Ouachita Farm
An experimental contour border flood irrigation system is being installed on 15 acres of Biedenharn farm near Cheniere Dam Ouachita parish. Under Ouachita Soil Conservation Service engineer Jimmy Wyche and trainee Aaron May the project aims to cover 40 acres, with pecans and grass as crops. The system uses six inch contour intervals and a two inch differential via levee contouring and filling, aided by small tractors bulldozers and a motor grader. Water comes from a private spring fed lake about 20 surface acres, with pump capacity of two million gallons per day and half a million gallons returned daily. An eight inch impeller pump lifts water to a 10 inch pipe system to flood units as large as three quarters of an acre each, delivering about 2000 gallons per minute.
