Legislature Adjourns as Bills Move Forward in Louisiana
Baton Rouge June 16 A week of activity in the Louisiana legislature yielded passage of several key measures. The house backed severance taxes on natural resources and an occupation license for black, plus creation of a criminal court of appeals and governor ouster power. The senate approved the civil code, levee board reorganization, state treasury funding draws, removal of offices to Baton Rouge, and stronger protections for policyholders. The week saw boisterous sessions over tax and textbook funding plans tied to Governor Huey Long. A $60 million road program faces committee review, while a gasoline tax hike to four cents aims to close a highway deficit and fund paving projects. North Louisiana gas and oil interests seek severance tax hearings Tuesday.
