Monroe resident Dan Armand Breard, longtime LSU Kappa Sigma member and oldest living in the fraternity, will celebrate his 98th birthday with family at his son Reneau Breard’s home. Federal courthouse renovations in Monroe include painted ceilings and walls and new light gray carpet to cut noise in the two level courtroom used by U.S. District Judge Tom Staff.
A tractor trailer left the I 20 exit ramp at Civic Center Boulevard before daylight and plunged 30 to 40 feet over the overpass. The driver William Allen Farmer, 42, of Stockton Missouri, escaped the cab with a suitcase and walked away. He was reported in satisfactory condition at St Francis Hospital at noon. Monroe police labeled the crash a total loss of the cab and trailer. The wreck damaged guard rails and signs and blocked westbound I 20 for hours. The incident marked a second crash at that location in under a year.
The Senate passed a sweeping antitrust bill 65 to 19 after days of debate and a compromise amendment. The measure broadens Justice Department enforcement and lets states seek treble damages for price fixing. Sen. Hart led the push, while Sen. Allen opposed it. A separate accident report notes a Stockton man survived a tractor trailer wreck on I-20 near Monroe with significant vehicle damage.
The revenue sharing program faces renewed life through a 3 4 year extension ending Sept 30, 1980, with $24.9 billion distributed to state and local governments. The House 361 to 35 vote accepted the measure amid debates over control and inflation protection, while Senate action appeared favorable.
Monroe will dedicate the General Claire Chennault Recreation Center with day long events on Sunday. A 2 p.m. ceremony at the gate will feature Mayor Ralph Troy as master of ceremonies and remarks by Congressman Otto Passman.
Ugandan President Idi Amin escaped an assassination bid when grenades were thrown at a crowd he addressed in Kampala. One person died and 76 wounded, four critically, with conflicting reports on Amin’s own injuries. Diplomats in Nairobi and Kampala noted calm as authorities detained suspects.
A West Carroll Parish resident, 20 year old David Mosley of Oak Grove, was killed in a one car crash on La. 589 east of Forest around 3 40 a m. His car struck a bridge crossed a roadside ditch and hit an embankment. Deputies say he was employed by KWCL Radio Oak Grove and died at the scene. Funeral arrangements are pending under Kidder Cox Funeral Home Oak Grove.
