Monroe could have to refuse natural gas service within about a year unless alternative fuel supplies are found. Roy Lange, general manager of the Monroe Utilities Commission, says the city is nearing its peak gas use from United Gas Pipe Line Co. Most gas serves homes, with surfeit going to the city power plant, while federal curtailment plans by the Federal Power Commission reduce available supplies.

Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards announced that the state's uncommitted delegates to the July Democratic convention will back California Gov. Jerry Brown if he remains a candidate. Brown, who described ongoing reassessment of the race, said the campaign will continue to challenge Carter and keep party debate open.
Sen Elwyn Nicholson withdrew Senate Bill 10 after discussions with colleagues. The proposal would have shortened the annual session from 60 working days over 85 calendar days to 60 calendar days. The measure was reported out of committee without action.
In Beirut, Syria and Palestinian Lebanese leftists announce a cease-fire to halt 14 months of fighting. Franjieh opposes an international Arab peacekeeping force, warning Christians will resist intervention while Arab leaders convene in Cairo to authorize a regional force.
