National Guard recruitment drive aims to double strength
Louisiana National Guard aims to raise its ranks from 5,575 to 11,087 with a statewide recruitment drive through June 30. Anjustant Gen. Raymond F. Hufft stressed guard roles, state control in peace, and federalized authority only in national emergencies. He urged veterans to join, qualified men 17 to 35 to enlist, and community support from citizens and women.

Hoffman will resign if ECA funds cut too deeply
Washington June 10 Paul Hoffman said he would resign as economic cooperation administrator if the senate trims European recovery funds too much. He argued he could not make the program a success within the appropriated money and would hand leadership to someone who can. He backed the House approved total of 3.563 billion dollars to be spent in 10 and a half months if needed.

Artane described as promising muscle relaxant at MAA meeting
Frank Carey reports at Atlantic City that the new drug artane shows promise for shaking palsy symptoms and is not a cure. Mayo Clinic's Dr Kendall B. Corbin says 77 percent of 104 patients derived benefit and more than half saw reduced tremor, with some side effects. Additional remarks note diminishing effect over time and reliance on patient reports for impression of benefit.
