Paris reports say Russia is likely to reject Dean Acheson’s demand to lift the Berlin blockade by Monday. Western officials say a near complete east west trade pact could take effect immediately if the Berlin rail strike ends, with Moscow signaling broader political questions remain unresolved at Paris.
Washington dispatch reports an FBI secret file naming Fredric March and other Hollywood figures as Communists in Judith Coplon espionage trial. The informant claimed March cooperated with the Communist Party for years and linked him with Oscar winners and other cultural figures.

Five major oil companies Texas, Humble, Stanolind, Magnolia and Shell filed suits in Baton Rouge seeking a declaratory judgment to suspend drilling obligations and annual rentals on state tidelands until the ownership dispute is settled. The state mineral board staff estimates about 2,000,000 dollars yearly in rentals on leased lands. the leases require drilling or rental payments to keep the lease. Mineral board records show the firms hold about 2,942,321 tidelands acres under lease.
Atlantic City June 9 The American Medical Association will not compromise on its opposition to compulsory health insurance. Board of trustees and new president Dr Ernest Ivons say the AMA will elaborate its 12 point plan for advancing medicine and public health and will convene a conference of labor and farm groups to gather views while staying firm against compulsory sickness insurance. Ivons says the conference will seek input from government, labor, education, agriculture, industry, and social service representatives.
Sister Stanilaus Catherine Malone, 83, died at Charity Hospital after 65 years of service. Born December 24, 1865 in Sacramento, she joined as a novice in 1884 and led the Sisters of Charity as supervisor from 1914 to 1946. Archbishop Rummel will preside at St Joseph's Church mass Saturday at 9 a.m. Burial follows in St Vincent's Cemetery.
The United Mine Workers plan a week long strike starting Monday to spotlight John L Lewis economics lecture amid coal industry overproduction. Lewis says inaction harms stability and workers will protect value in coal mining, with mixed industry and retailer reactions and some dissent on terms.
Four Russian officers fought off a 20-striker mob that invaded the Soviet controlled Berlin Reichsbahn headquarters on the Spree canal. American police later guarded the building as a Soviet complaint labeled the incident hoodlum activity. Rail workers planned to block reporting for duty as 14,000 Reichsbahn employees press west mark wage and job security demands.
Senator Long proposes federal funds to fill Grant's Canal in Lake Providence Louisiana. The 3200 foot canal dug by General Grant in 1863 to aid Vicksburg campaign was shortened by locals to 1109 feet and now deemed a health and safety menace. The bill seeks Army engineers to complete filling at about 11000 dollars.
Washington June 9 The United Mine Workers chief John L. Lewis drew fresh anger from senators as he ordered a one week coal pit shutdown amid debates to repeal the Taft Hartley act including its emergency injunction. Senators privately said the move weakens repeal momentum while Lewis renewed calls for abolition of the injunction provision.
Proclamations signed by the governor and issued by the secretary of state name elected officials in eleven Louisiana towns. Bossier City Alexandria Lake Charles Gretna Donaldsonville Brash and other towns list mayors marshals and commissioners among the newly proclaimed officials.
Baton Rouge Louisiana June 9 The attorney general says the state veteran bonus of 1000 dollars goes to children under 16 when the act took effect. The ruling to the veterans affairs bonus division notes surviving parents collect if no child under 16 exists.
Washington reported that Lewis L. Strauss of the atomic energy commission testified that radioactive isotopes sent abroad could aid germ warfare research. He acknowledged mistakes but said overall performance should be judged from outside. The hearing, led by Senator Hickenlooper, faced claims of incredible mismanagement and procedural confusion.
Louisiana public works director J. Lester White said airmen will fly from all directions to New Orleans for the National Association of State Aviation Officials convention October 30 to November 2. Two airmen were killed and a third seriously injured when a B-45 jet bomber from Barksdale Air Force Base crashed on a routine training flight near Minden highway east of Shreveport. The crash, under investigation, scattered wreckage over a wide area and left two bodies burned beyond recognition.
Shreveport officials announce a tornado warning system for the Ark La Tex region to warn of approaching tornadoes and storms within a 100 mile radius. Weather Bureau Regional Director Farle L. Hardy says the system should be operable by June 20 with a $500 yearly cost shared by local agencies and utilities. Volunteer observers will provide 24 hour vigilance and report to the Shreveport weather station via phone or radio for broadcast alerts.
The Monroe Police Department won first place for the second year running in the quick draw hip shooting contest at the Louisiana Peace Officers' Convention in Baton Rouge with a score of 408.6. Capt. J. B. Whitfield set a new event record with 106.1 points. The Ouachita Parish Sheriff's team placed third with 392.8, while the New Orleans Police Department scored 396.5 for second place and Alexandria Police Department fourth with 387. The U. S. Immigration Border Patrol finished fifth at 364.5. Officer W. H. Soureal earned second high with 105.5, repeating as top shooter last year. Other Monroe team members included Sgt. B.
