Pasadena AP reports Surveyor 1 is aimed at a gentle lunar landing at 12 17 a m CST to photograph and guide future Apollo landings. If successful it will slow from 6100 mph to 3 percent mph and drop 14 feet with minimal impact. Soviet Luna 9 last February sent first lunar pictures. experts say its fall would be fatal to an unprotected human, noting Luna 9 used no retro rockets and relied on a different technique.
