In the Mekong Delta near 69 miles southwest of Saigon a U S task force of 600 infantry tried to encircle a Viet Cong company believed to be 100 plus strong. Eight Americans were killed and 11 wounded as Viet Cong casualties reached 48 with the rest slipping away before dawn.
The Morehouse Parish School Board voted 10 to 4 not to renew the contract of Dr. Joe Campbell who had led the Morehouse unit since May 1967. T. A. Rogers was chosen as new president while vice president selection ended in a 7-7 deadlock between Carroll Hill and Anne Barham. No replacement was named for Campbell.
Police arrest a suspect in the assassination of Education Minister Le Minh Tri in Saigon. The suspect wore a military uniform and carried the minister’s car license number plus a partial routine for Tri. Government spokesmen blame Viet Cong terrorism, while others cite Tri’s private enemies.

He was a member of Temple B Nai Israel and Monroe Downtown Lions Club. He is survived by his widow Minna H. Smith, two sons Louis D. and Ansel H. Smith, a daughter Minette Smith in Dallas, a brother Dr Louis D. Smith of Chicago, two sisters Emma Rosenbaum and Jennie Smith, and several grandchildren. Pallbearers include Grayson Guthrie and others.
