Rep Ford Stinson read a resolution from Negro teachers in Bossier Parish urging support for separate schools. The document asserts Negro teachers understand local problems and can better meet Negro youth needs in designated schools and praises Gov Davis, the legislature, and Supt Jackson for defending segregation.
FAA head Flward R. Quesada defended announcing preliminary findings in the New York air disaster to protect the public and justify prompt safety measures. United’s William Patterson and pilots’ leaders challenged his right to speculate before CAB conclusions.
Dallas antique dealer Stan Thomason mailed 49 of 50 Christmas cards before noticing one card read Merry Christmas and happy New Year from the five of us. He must now call the 44 recipients to inform them of the mistake and identify the sender list.
A bull escaped from a slaughterhouse and wandered through downtown Rome during a Christmas shopping rush. Pedestrians ran for shelter as shoppers shuttered stores and traffic halted on the main street. Firefighters restrained the animal with a rope and returned it to the slaughterhouse.
Santander Spain AP One survivor and one body were found from the freighter Elorrio which broke in half off the Bay of Biscay coast. The 21 crewmen aboard were from the ship en route to Valencia for scrapping after 38 years of service.
Greenvi ll, Pa. CAPA reports two fatalities from heart attacks. A 62 year old funeral director, A Walter Clark of Jamestown, died after stepping from a stalled pickup on an icy grade. Mortician Niles MacConahey, 44, died in a telephone booth while contacting the coroner.
The Valley Forge recovered two empty liferafts sighted by Coast Guard planes as a tanker broke apart. Survivors reported that the master and officers were in the bow and could not reach the stern when it ripped away. Earlier, a Marine helicopter recovered the Mercury space capsule northeast of Grand Bahama.
Newton Iowa merchants report a Christmas tree shortage with no trees left in town since last Saturday. More than 3000 trees have been sold as shoppers rush to prepare for the holiday season.
