A destroyer rushed 29 survivors from the storm wreck Pine Ridge toward Norfolk as eight crewmen remained missing in the Atlantic. Chief Engineer John Richart, 36, of Wilmington Delaware, stayed aboard the stern to protect salvage rights while Coast Guard planes searched at dawn for the missing. Survivors were transferred to the destroyer Conway for the trip to Norfolk, with the Pine Ridge wreckage about 100 miles east of Cape Hatteras.
In Moscow Andrei Gromyko told the Supreme Soviet that the Soviet Union is ready to improve U S relations after Kennedy's inauguration and hopes relations will revert to the Roosevelt era. Premier Khrushchev had earlier expressed a similar sentiment in a congratulatory cable. The four day session ended with broad approval of Gromyko's foreign policy review, which did not signal policy changes.

A death row inmate in California is set to receive a Christmas card from Gov. Edmund G. Brown. The card was mailed by mistake to Alexander Robillard III, a 20 year old killer awaiting appeal for a Hillsborough police officer’s death. The governor’s secretary called it a tragic mistake but the mail will be forwarded to San Quentin.

In Lancaster Pennsylvania Dutch farmers seek animal talk on Christmas Eve from 11 to 12 in barn vigil. The belief says listening grants understanding of animal sounds and foretells safety and good omens for the new year. Farmers also use farm stock hay to moisten with dew and bread offerings to children to protect them.
SHREVEPORT La AP two Marines from California heading home for Christmas died in a crash on Highway 80 about 14 miles east of Bossier City. Victims were Newell Carroll 24 and Gary Loyer 24 both Ocean City California. Driver Bruce Pryor 19 Blythe California survived uninjured. They were en route from Fort Lee Virginia where they studied at a military school.
NEW ORLEANS AP Public schools closed for the Christmas break but four thousand teachers face a payless day as a fight between federal courts and the State Legislature over school integration blocks funding. A federal court ordered four banks to release about 728000 dollars to the Orleans Parish School Board and to turn over 200000 dollars in taxes held in escrow.
Baton Rouge AP report says Rep. Wellborn Jack of Caddo Parish attacked The Shreveport Times on the House floor for criticizing his vote for Gov. Davis 28 million sales tax raise. Jack called the paper lousy and warned of a federal school integration fight. Fellow segregationist Rep. Ford Stinson also criticized the paper while Rep. E J Frizzaffii retrieved the paper and placed it on the press desk. The Times editorial praising those who opposed the tax noted the paper did not question the sincerity of supporters.

A warehouse blaze at 213 Olive Street near North Third and Olive was extinguished by Monroe Fire Department in under 30 minutes after discovery. The fire started in an insulation company storage area next to a laundry, causing minor damage to adjacent structures.

Across Chicago Hartford City Baltimore Poteet and New York City fires during a frigid night killed 17 people, mostly young children.
