Fourteen Amendments Take Effect In Louisiana Sunday
Louisiana’s 14 constitutional amendments ratified last November 6 became effective at midnight Sunday. The repeal of the poll tax allows voting without that prerequisite, while other amendments impose a state income tax, homestead exemptions, vehicle property tax relief, and local tax limits. The Central Committee will meet in Baton Rouge to choose a new chairman to replace Mayor Walmsley, with 44 acts also taking effect Thursday at noon.

Houseboat Fire Claims 5 Lives Near Wynne Arkansas
A houseboat fire on Riverfront St. Francis Bay seven miles east of Wynne killed a mother, father, and their three children. The couple Bill Haliburton and his wife, both about 35, perished while trying to rescue the children. The children aged about 10, 6, and 4 were unnamed and the boat burned to ash with bodies sinking. Sheriff C. M. Stacey said the family had lived in the area for years and that Haliburton supported them by hunting and fishing.
