Revenge Motive Hinted in Coogan Attack
Police say a coast area shooting may be revenge against Jackie Coogan and his parents for a song. Joe Block, 42, a patrolman, was shot three times and wounded at the Coogan residence in Wilshire County after a man hidden in shrubbery fled in a roadster. The suspect, McCrea alias Don Opperd, a former chauffeur for the Coogans, had been dismissed previously. Coogan manager Arthur L. Bernstein reported a call warning he was marked for death.
