Uruguay sinks deeper into crisis as mass strikes halt government workers railways banks and schools. Power cuts and food shortages worsen as the CNT presses for a 40 percent wage boost amid a winter of shortages and drought.
Funeral services for Mrs. Dorothy Spillers Lowe 44 of Calhoun are set for 11 a.m. Friday at Mulhearn's Funeral Home Chapel Monroe with Rev. R C Crawley officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. She died Wednesday in Baton Rouge after a long illness. Survivors include two daughters Mrs Dennis W Fischer Day Village Ohio and Miss Carland Lowe two sons Darreil I Lowe and Daniel Lowe both of New Orleans her mother Mrs Jackie Fleming New Orleans a brother Jim Spillers Baron Ramee and a sister Mrs Earl Bradshaw Monroe.
William Faulkner in a 1960 letter argued that Negroes must be changed completely to gain equality and justice. The missive, revealed by Paul Pollard, criticized the NAACP and cited George Washington Carver on needing white approval, with Pollard selling the letter for 500 dollars.
Three nuns of the Daughters of the Cross in Shreveport renewed vows to mark 50 years of service in north Louisiana. A fourth member completed 25 years. Notables include Sister Aloysius Scallan of Mansura and St Frederick's High School Monroe, Sister Joseph Marie Zavone of Monroe, and Sisters Elizabeth Freeman and Philomena Mayeux of Monroe with past roles at St Matthew's and Good Shepherd.

A seven man delegation from business engineering and education groups visited West Monroe to view a prototype sugar cane harvester from Sugarland Implements Inc. Inventor A L Roberts hosted lunch at Highland Park Country Club as officials demonstrated the machine still under development. Information on a patent is expected soon and the group asked questions to address growing interest in the invention.

Ralph Caldwell of Monroe announced for Ouachita representative with plans for two to three police jury candidates. Possible special election for West Monroe alderman seat eyed. death of Alderman Roland Nix cited. Democratic and Republican state central meetings set for Baton Rouge on Saturday. Monroe Mayor Howard to attend.
Brief Monroe City Court session presided by Judge W L Crowe saw Sandra S Bean for feited $100 bond on a theft by check charge. City Atty pressed two theft by check charges against Jack Potts Jr. Irma Johnson was found not guilty of having a vicious dog. Michael A Shockley fined $100 for theft. William Morgan Johnson fined $10 for negligent driving.
James Jackson alias Jerry Jackson remains in Ouachita Parish jail on rape and simple robbery charges from June. Bond set at 1500 after extradition from Los Angeles. Also jailed Wednesday was Delman Gene Smith 36 charged with forgery returned from Yuma Arizona. Bond for Michael Newman 17 charged with robbery of Step-In Variety Store July 10 set at 1000. West Monroe police booked Billy Joe Frances for theft by check. Leon Flint 27 charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle. Two juveniles arrested and turned over to authorities. Arzoo Buckley Jr. 17 charged with theft of 99 from Lucille Dudley. Four teen girls chased for stealing pants at Shzin Berg Eastgate. One 15 year old turned to juvenile court. three escaped. Monroe police investigate hub cap theft valued 150. West Monroe officers charge David W Griffin 26 and Bobby Simpson 25 with theft by check.
A 15 year old girl Claudia Ann Williams was wounded in the right foot in a shooting accident at her home on 103 Dianne Street Ouachita Parish deputies said. She was taken to St Francis Hospital by Gentry’s ambulance service in good condition.
