Nine Columbia Lock bids opened for Ouachita project
Nine bids for the final phase of the Ouachita River nine foot channel project near Columbia were opened led by Blount Construction Co of Montgomery at about $9.646 million. Col. James A Betts announced a preliminary low bid and aimed to award by June 30. The Columbia lock will be 80 feet wide and 600 feet long replacing the old 55 by 268 feet structure with completion targeted for late 1968 or early 1969.

Flood Buries Residents In West Texas Town
A cloudburst caused a 15 foot wall of water to sweep through Sanderson Texas drowning at least a dozen people and leaving about 450 homeless. Eight more were injured and fourteen bodies were found with some later identified as family members washed from graves. The flood destroyed 50 to 75 houses and all south-side businesses on Highway 90. Evacuation to Fort Stockton affected 250 to 400 residents while typhoid shots were given to about 1,600 townspeople. A temporary morgue and Red Cross disaster center were established. bridges and tracks were washed out blocking trains and roads.
