Viet Cong fire mortars for the first time on Saigon, hitting Cho Lon near the Chinese quarter as a midnight strike. No casualties reported but a police post grenade injury to a policeman and four civilians. US curfew placed on American personnel from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m through Christmas.
The Monroe Jaycees received recognition in the U S Jaycee magazine Future for rapid aid to Hurricane Betsy victims. Louisiana volunteers led by Charles Witty filled a trailer with clothes and food after the storm, mobilizing citizens and neighbors nationwide.

Tommy Carson 18 of Hodge died when his southbound car crossed into the opposite lane and collided head on with another on Louisiana Highway 167 about 6 p.m. Passenger injuries to Mr and Mrs William Brooks of Quitman. Mrs Brooks treated at Hodge Clinic then moved to Schumpert in Shreveport. Funeral plans pending. Carson survived by parents, three brothers Kent Freddie Rickey and five sisters Brenda Pam Charlotte Donna Sandy. maternal grandparents Glen and Mrs McVay of Oak Grove.

Hanoi rejected Washington claims that North Vietnamese leaders told visiting Western politicians they were ready to negotiate an end to the Vietnam War.
