Duke Football Thrill for Jim Dearth and Family

Jim Dearth played for Duke in a recent game against Ann Arbor Michigan. His grandmother Nellie Dearth watched her first football game and loved the family turnout from Monroe. The gathering included Joe and Jim Dearth, Chuck, Fred and Paul Miller, Don Miller, Jerry Conaway, and others as Anne Kleckner and her family visited. E Reid Gilbert, son in law of Mrs Clara Miller, directed Hodag seen by Lyndon B Johnson in Spring Green. He was to return to Lambuth College but stayed to direct the play for the Uplands Art Council.

Post Midnight Calls a Bargain

The FCC announced 100 million dollars in long distance rate cuts for AT and T with new 75 cent maximum for three minute calls between midnight and 7 a.m. Effective Nov. 1, a broader 1 dollar coast to coast rate will apply 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. weekdays plus weekends and holidays. Additional changes reduce many calls beyond 468 miles while raising some short interstate rates.

He spent 23 years in outdoor show business, 21 as the fat man, with Ringling Bros. experiences and four seasons at Madison Square Garden. He plans to attend the Chicago showmen’s convention and book acts for next summer, noting money woes in the Midwest but enthusiasm for circus life. He sold 15,000 autographed pictures at the Garden, second only to the midget clown.

The annual Watershed Fun Day is planned for Sunday October 1 at the Monroe Municipal Airport. The program includes an airlift at 10 a.m. a slow pitch tournament at 12:30 p.m. a horseshoe event at 12:30 and children’s games at 1:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
